2022-02-01 Do you live a life of quiet desperation?

Do you hold on to this urge to do better things for yourself, but never really see it through? Do you find a strong enough reason to hold yourself back every time you feel this urge? Maybe you know what you need to do for yourself or have some idea — maybe you need to read that book, get in shape, negotiate your salary or approach some difficult conversation — but does holding back make you suffer in silence?

We may try to compensate for that hole we feel within by asking others to help us fill it in or indulge in some form of entertainment, but those offer only varying degrees of temporary relief. It won’t be long before we find ourselves falling so deep that the only way we know how to survive is to become comfortable with our disappointment.

But is this any way to live? How would we truly learn, love and live? Even if we do find a way, would life feel complete? Referring to Carl Jung, anyone who refuses to experience life must stifle their desire to live, they must commit partial suicide. That doesn’t sound exciting at all, does it? So no, a life of quiet desperation is no way to truly live.

And we often need to break ourselves free by taking a moment to focus on what’s best for us.
