It is universally acknowledged that the young are usually to be drawn to a pursuit considered reckless, they wouldn’t abandon their ideals until they achieve what they want. Take a recent news for example: A eighteen-old girl in China who has received the admission notice from University of Cambridge, devoted herself to a great number of thick foreign original books about psychology just because of being motivated of the movie ”The Silence of the Lambs”.However, motivated by the books of Jack London ,Thoreau and Tolstoy,McCandless isn’t satisfied with the academic research,he choose the hardest and most risky mean to follow these idealists----GOING INTO THE WILD.
The writer tells us a real story that after graduating from Emory University ,a top student and excellent athlete McCandless abandoned possessions, gave his entire $24,000 savings account to charity and hitchhiked to Alaska, where he went to live in the wilderness.Four months later,he turned up dead.
At the beginning of the story,I was extremely confuse about the acts of McCandless. Why he abandon his car and chose to hitchhike? Why he abandoned his possessions and lived like a tramp? Why he were not prepared before he entered the wilderness? At that time , in my eyes, the sentences that McCandless loves too obscure and not suitable for the high-speed modern society.
But,as the process of reading the book ,I slowly figure out the spirits and the ideals McCandless was pursuing are so precious and meaningful that most people dream to purse them when they young but give up and even scorn them.Different from most other people,McCandless mostly had done it.
You can’t help but like McCandless ,as for me ,I am more likely to view his escaping from home as a unfortunately failed self-imposed challenge which he mostly completed.I agree with the view points which has been mentioned by the author in the article”Unlike Muir and Thoreau,McCandless went into the wilderness not primarily to ponder nature or the world ,rather,to explore the inner country of his own soul.”
It would be easy to stereotype Christopher McCandless as another boy who felt too much, but the stereotype isn’t a good fit .McCandless wasn’t some feckless slacker, adrift and confuses, racked by existential despair. To the contrary:His life hummed with meaning and purpose. But the meaning he wrested from existence lay beyond the comfortable path:McCandless distrusted the value of things that came easily. He demanded much of himself----more,in the end, than he could deliver.
Therefore, we can learn from McCandless’s attitude towards life to endeavor to let our lives make sense. And as a young man ,I also learn not to set too high moral standard towards no matter me or people around me in case of making myself trapped.
In any case ,I am very appreciate McCandlss’s insistence on his belief and ideal and the fact that he not only held them but also put them into practice. His pure and indomitable spirit will permanently persists in my heart, lighting my way of life head.
