Our education system is predicated on the idea of academic ability, and there is a reason. The whole system was invented around the world when there were no public systems of education before the 19th century. They all come into being to meet the needs of industrialism. So the hierarchy is rooted on two ideas.
我们的教育体系建立在学术能力之上,是有原因的。19世纪我们在创造这套教育机制的时候,全世界范围内并没有公立教育制度。它的出现是为了满足工业化的需求,所以这种学科阶级制度植根于两种观念。
Number one, that the most useful subjects for work are at the top. So you were probably steered benignly away from things at school when you were a kid, things you liked on the grounds that you would never get a job doing that. Is that right? “Don’t do music, you’re not going to be a musician; Don’t do art, you won’t be an artist.” Benign advice—now, profoundly mistaken. The whole world is engulfed in a revolution.
第一,最有利于工作的学科享有最高的地位。所以,当你还是个学生的时候,学校就善意地引导你不要去学某些学科,因为就算学会了,以后也用不上。没错吧?“别去学音乐,你根本就成为不了音乐家。别去学艺术,你也不会成为艺术家。”在今天看来,这些当时善意的建议,大错特错。我们现在正处于一场巨大的变革之中。
Number two, academic ability which has really come to dominate our view of intelligence, because the universities designed the system in their image. The whole system of education is a protracted process of university entrance. And the consequence is that many highly-talented, brilliant, creative people think they are not, because the thing they were good at at school wasn’t valued or was actually stigmatized.
第二,我们对于智力的看法取决于学术能力的高低,因为大学院校以它们的形象为蓝本设计了这套教学制度,目的就是为大学之门铺路。结果就导致了,那些有天分的、杰出的、有创造力的孩子们自我否定,因为他们的专长在学校不被重视,甚至常常被批判。
