“Learning AgriCultures: Insights from sustainable small-scale farming” is an educational series suitable for educators and teachers at universities and vocational schools who are looking for a comprehensive course on sustainable agriculture.
The seven modules of the series provide a systems-thinking approach to agricultural production within different contexts. The seven themes of the Learning AgriCultures series are:
Sustainable small-scale farming
Module 1 provides an overview of issues concerning small farm sustainability, which are to be explored in the Learning AgriCultures series.
Module 2discusses different aspects of soil and water systems, and reflects on soil and water sustainability issues for small-scale farming in particular.
Module 3 describes different aspects of small-scale cropping systems, with particular attention to mixed cropping practices.
Module 4 seeks to engage people in discussions about small-scale livestock systems - both sedentary and pastoralist.
Module 5 seeks to engage people in discussions about labour dynamics as well as energy use in small-scale farming.
Markets and finance for small-scale farmers
Module 6 is dedicated to the economic aspects of small-scale farming – in particular to the influence of markets and finance.
Knowledge for small-scale farming
Module 7 examine various aspects of knowledge in small-scale agriculture at farm level, in the wider context, and at the level of governing institutions.
