Chapter 21: Last Day
Wilbur wanted to talk to Charlotte, but he found she was very tired. He asked her why she helped him so much. She answered it was because they were friends. She said that a spider's life couldn't help being something of a mess, with all those trapping and eating flies. By helping Wilbur, she was trying to lift up her life a trifle. She also told Wilbur that she wouldn't go back to the barn with him, because she was dying soon. Wilbur couldn't believe that but he tried to do something for Charlotte. He thought about the egg sac and begged Templeton to climb on the web and get it back to him. Wilbur was going to take the sac back to the barn. Templeton didn't want to do for Wilbur because he wanted something for rewards. Wilbur knew Templeton's favorite was food, so he told Templeton that he would let him first eat the slops which Lurvy gave him. Templeton was happy to hear that and did what Wilbur had asked him to do. Wilbur put the sac in his mouth and winked to Charlotte, who knew that meant goodbye. The next morning Charlotte died in the empty Fair Ground.
