Men often discover their affinity to each other by the mutual love they have for a book just as two persons sometimes discover a friend by the admiration which both entertain for a third. There is an old proverb, "Love me, love my dog." But there is more wisdom in this: "Love me, love my book."The book is a truer and higher bond of union. Men can think, feel, and sympathize with each other through their favorite author. They live in him together, and he in them.
译文：喜欢同一本书的人，常常发现彼此间习性也相近，就像有一时两个人因为敬慕同一个人而成为朋友一样。古时有句谚语："爱屋及乌。" 其实，"爱我及书"这句活蕴涵更多的哲理。书是更为真诚而高尚的情谊纽带。人们可以通过共同喜爱的作者沟通思想，交流感情，产生共鸣。他们和作者情感相通，作者和他们思想相融。

知识点2: the admiration which both entertain for a third
讲解：
1. 结构：这是一个带有定语从句的名词短语，在整个句子中放在介词by后，作状语。admiration是短语的核心部分，后面的定语从句是对它的修饰。
2. 定语从句：which both entertain for a third
定语从句中的主语是both（指前文提到的two persons），谓语是及物动词entertain，而entertain的宾语则是被修饰的核心名词admiration，介词短语for a third是对admiration的补充，意思是“对……（的欣赏）”，a third表示另外一个人。如果把admiration还原到定语从句中补全从句要表达的意思，应该是：both entertain an admiration for a third。

知识点3: They live in him together, and he in them.
讲解：这句话直译过来是：他们（读者）与他（作者）同在，而他（作者）也与他们（读者）同在。后半句为了避免重复，省略了谓语live和状语together。这句话旨在说明读者在读书的时侯，实际是在和作者进行一场思想的交流，他们随着作者的文字而喜而悲，仿佛和作者生活在同一个时空。反过来，作者在创作的时候，也不能抛开读者而孤立行文，而是仿佛在向读者诉说一个故事、倾吐自己的心声。为了更好地表现读者和作者之间的联系，译文用“情感相通，思想相融”这八个字替换了简单的“同在”二字。

喜欢一本书就如同喜欢一个人一样，是极为主观和个性化的行为。喜欢的书里蕴藏着一个人的品味、偏好、经历、情感以及价值观，两个价值观相似、人生经历相似的人很可能会对同一本书产生兴趣，可以一起兴致勃勃地讨论里面的情节和人物，不要太high哟。其实我们在读一本书的时候，与其说是在读故事，还不如说是在读人——读角色和作者。在阅读过程中，我们很容易把自己代入其中的角色，经历着他／她的经历，思考着他／她的思考，体会着他／她的喜怒哀乐。大概这也是为什么读书能够开拓眼界、丰富心灵的原因吧！
