Today,we are going to introduce a book named the great Gatsby.The theme we talk about is attitude towards life.First, let's look at the writing background of the book.
The Great Gatsby is a novel written by American writer F. Scott Fitzgerald ,and it was published in 1925 .The book is based on the life of New York City and Long Island in the 1920s.And that period is called roaring twenties and jazz age.
Then,we talk about what does attitude mean?Life attitude mainly includes people’s general intention towards social life;their persistent belief toward life and the way to reflect various life experience.
After discussing the definition of life attitude,let’s talk about Gatsby’s life attitude.First,is about he have luxury social life and held a large party every day.Second,his life belief is the pursuit of money and power.Third,his life experience about the wait for love and the ultimate sacrifice for love.
After the First World War, the Americans lost their faith. When everyone did not know what should they struggled for, the American dream was put forward by government, and it attracted all Americans to fight for their own dream. Fitzgerald used himself as a model to write such a great Gatsby, and Gatsby’s ending also implies the ending of the American dream.
Firstly,Gatsby’s luxurious social life. Gatsby is yearning for money. He has become rich by various manners. After he became rich, he began to squander money. He spent a lot of money to hold parties.He make friends with various
politicians,businessmen. They all felt enjoyable about the parties .There are many descriptions of luxury scenes in the book.For example,”on weekends his RollsRoyce become an omnibus,bearing parties to and from the city between nine in the morning and long past midnight,which his station wagon scampered like a brisk yellow bug to meet all trains.”Gatsby’s attitude towards social life is generally materialistic . He was willing to make friends with rich people and enjoys all kinds of happiness from money.
Secondly,Gatsby’s persistent pursuit of money and power.Gatsby’s life style is very regular.He insists on the same thing every day.In order to be in the same class with Daisy,he keeps climbing up and performs well in the battlefield.But in the process,he did something against the morality and law.And that’s a negative attitude.
Thirdly,Gatsby’s attachment to love and the tragedy he eventually sacrificed for love.Regardless of other aspects, I think Gatsby’s greatest aspect lies in his persistent pursuit of love. For the girl in his heart, he struggled on the battlefield and waited her for five years, even though Daisy had been married and have my own daughter during this period.Gatsby did not hesitate to spend so much money to hold so many grand queues. He only hoped that Daisy could come,even just one time. He only wanted to see the people he loved.We think that Gatsby's thoughts on love and the pursuit of Daisy are just a kind of obsession, and it’s amid at proving himself. In the beginning, he loved Daisy, but in the end, he only loved the memories of his love. Gatsby did not want to believe that Daisy was different from five years ago. The pursuit of Gatsby's love is consistent with the Americans' pursuit of the American dream at that time.
After Daisy killed Tom’s lover by car,Gatsby hid the fact for her and took the place of her.After that,the husband of the deceased shot Gatsby in revenge for his wife.Gatsby’s life came to an end.We hope that everyone can have a faithful attitude towards love, but don’t lost yourself in love.
Then,we can connect with the reality that there are different life attitudes in our college students life. Some college students are unwilling to participate in social activities. They give up communicating with others because they are not good at expressing themselves.Their attitude of not contacting the society makes them more and more introverted.They have the ideal of pursuing money as their lifelong faith . They do not think that learning is important, and in their minds,there is no awareness of working hard towards the future.And they do not know how to find a solution in the face of setbacks.They only complain about others.They can not calmly discuss with their partners , nor will they find their own deficiencies.They only want to blame others.These attitudes are negative.
However,college students’ attitude towards life is not only negative but also positive.College students actively make friends in social life,learn how to communicate,strongly pursue knowledge and refuse the undesirable phenomenon in the society.They life belief should be more in order to better graduate and for the future career,in order to make their life more happy.And life experience is not to give up in the face of failure,but to be grateful,objective and calm analysis,and then put the right attitude to find solutions.
Finally,by comparing college students’ negative and positive life attitudes,we should choose a positive life attitude,so that our life will be more beautiful.
