“clout”可以作动词表示“猛击”，也可以作为名词使用，不可数。表示“影响力”“权势”，clout 在棒球运动可以表示“猛力的一打”，正如棒球高手可以猛力挥打棒球影响赛况，有的人能够挥舞手中的权势影响社会。因此当 clout 作为名词表示“影响力”“权势”时，它比 influence，power 更有画面感。
