Southwest China's Guizhou province recorded a 10% increase in its GDP in the first half of the year, the fastest growth among 19 provinces and regions which have released their economic data until Monday. It was followed by Jiangxi province, whose economy saw a 9% growth rate and total volume of its GDP for the first time crossed the trillion-yua level, reaching 1.01 trillion yuan. From Jan-June, 15 of the 19 regions grew at or above 6.8% - the average growth rate in the country. Guangdong consolidated its top spot with 4.63 trillion yuan from Jan-June this year, Jiangsu ranked the second place with 4.49 trillion yuan. At the same time, Tianjin's GDP growth rate fell 3.5 percentage points from 6.9% in 2017 to 3.4% this year, dropping down to th bottom of the ranking list.

The Yangtze finless porpoise remains in extreme danger of extinction despite intensified efforts in recent years to protect the rare species, which is endemic to China's longest river, according to a recent national survey. The total number of the finless porpoises is estimated at 1,012, a 10% decline compared with a previous survey in 2012, Yu Kangzhen, vice-minister of agriculture and rural affairs, said at a news conference on Tuesday. Ma Yi, the ministry's chief fishing supervisor for the Yangtze, said the ministry is working with the National Forestry and Grassland Administration on a proposal to the State Council to upgrade the species to a Category 1 animal for national protection.

Sanitary pads are now tax-free in India. The Indian government has decided to scrap a controversial 12% tax on the feminine hygiene products, it announced, marking a victory for campaigners who have lobbied against the tax for more than a year. Activists say removing the tax on pads tackles one of the biggest barriers to education for girls, who are often forced to stay at home due to a lack of access to clean hygiene products, while also facing stigma and a lack of toilets in schools. Periods are among the leading factors for girls to drop out of school in India, where four out of five women and girls are estimated by campaigners to have no access to sanitary pads during their period.(See photo)

A new study from the University of Waterloo has found that in some ways, the older you get the worse your decision making becomes. The study established that younger children seem to make slightly better decisions than older children. The older children get, the more they tend to ignore some of the information available to them when making judgments. “Kids at different ages don't treat all information similarly when we set out to teach them ne things,“ said Stephanie Denison, an associate professor in the Department of Psychology. Children will use the data in the way they think makes the most sense. The younger children were more likely to take all aspects of information into account, she said.

Frequent use of mobile phones can lead to deterioration of memory performance of specific brain regions due to exposure to radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMF) during mobile phone use, researchers said. In a new study carried out by scientists at the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute, researchers found that the so-called figural memory performance, or the ability to remember abstract forms, can deteriorate if the brain is often exposed to RF-EMF. Evidence is clear that radiatio has had a significant impact on the right half of the brain, where the figural memory is located, among adolescents who hold the phone to their right ear when making a call. Sending text messages or surfing the internet has had no noticeable impact, according to the study.

Wildfires sweeping through a Greek resort town have killed at least 74 people. The inferno was Greece's deadliest since fires devastated the southern Peloponnese peninsula in August 2007, killing dozens. Officials said it broke out in the town of Mati, 29 km east of Athens late on Monday afternoon. “Greece is going through an unspeakable tragedy,“ Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said in a television speech and declared three days of national mourning. According to the latest official count, 187 injured people were hospitalized. Meanwhile, hundreds of firefighters were still battling against flare-ups and emergency crews were searching for missing persons inside charred remains of summer homes and cars.

Practically speaking, the Bel Air resident wants easier transit between his homes and the SpaceX campus in Hawthorne, 27 k to the south. From a theoretical standpoint, Musk hopes to demonstrate that subterranean, supersonic public transit isn't just a futuristic fantasy but realistic solution for what ails many of America's busiest and most cash-strapped metropolises.
