Education enables students to learn more about the world or acquire skills to be more competitive in the society, so it's appropriate to call it life-changing and the purpose of education is the guideline of all the educational activities, thus the debate over the usefulness or self-achieving effect of the educational purpose is fueling. Some people believe that the education mainly serves for the government, so the purpose of education it should be cultivating useful and needed talents for society. They hold the view that the input of students that the society needs the most will help their the domestic economy function well and people's lives get better, and since it's mostly the government and taxpayers who are paying for the free and compulsory education, the purpose of education should follow the needs of society.

Others argue that the purpose of education should be helping students to be a better person and achieve their personal ambitions. The biggest motivation for students to learn well is their own interest and their desire to realize their dreams--no matter they are the dreams to be painters that society doesn't need urgently or scientists that could help their country to be more competitive in the international stage--they are, after all, their personal choices and we should respect individual's choice should be respected. If the government uses compulsory means to dilute the education for their unwanted majors, students who be deprived of their choices will have to work in a job they don't like or even don't work at all refuse to work and the happiness and as well as living standards of the citizens will be diminished.

In my opinion, to promote the education that society needs the most is a better choice since the industries and companies stand in line with the direction of economy, they recruit the students that they need the most. Graduates are finding it harder to find a job if they ignore the usefulness of their study to the society while studying. For example, not only the Chinese mobile giants Huaiwei and Xiaomi give most of their offers to IT major students, big chain enterprises like Wanda is also recruiting people who are good at using high technology. The purpose of schooling is to prepare students for the society and not to be as naive as they used to be, thus the students should be informed and encouraged to choose more practical and useful studies but still preserve the right to make decisions for themselves.
