（1）other 作 pron 意思是 " 其他的人 （物）；另外的人 （物） 。作adj 另外的 ；其他的 ；别的 。作 adv 另外地；不同地 ；用别的方法的 。
<1> 用作形容词，在句中作定语 。在一般情况下 ，other 常常修饰复数可数名词 ，如果修饰单数名词，就要用another 或 the other ;只有在其它词的辅助下 ，other 才能修饰单数可数名词 。
eg : I don 't know if other children will be interested in this story .
我不知道其他的孩子们是否会对这个故事感兴趣 。
W'll come some other day .
我们改日来 。
<2> 用作代词
Hold it in this hand , not the other .
用这只手握着 ，不要用那只手 。
<3> 用作副词
I can't do other than to go .
我只好去 。
（2）the other 意思是 ‘’（两个中）另一个人（物） ‘’ 。常与one 搭配 构成 ‘’ one ...the other ...‘’句型 。
eg: I have two brothers , one is a doctor , and the other is a college student .
我有两个哥哥 ，一个是医生 ，另一个是大学生 。
（3）another 意思是‘’另一个（的）‘’即可以用作形容词，在句子中作定语，又可用作代词，代替单数名词。
eg : <1>作形容词用
I don't like the colour of thi pencil cas . Could you show me another one ?
我不喜欢这个铅笔盒的颜色 。你能给我看看另一个吗 ？
<2> 作代词 意思是另一个，再一个
eg : Please show me another .
请再拿一个给我看看 。（至少已看过一个）
（4）other 意思是‘’其他的人或物 ‘’ ，作代词用时泛指‘’另外的人或物 。常与some 搭配构成 " some ...others ... "句型 。
eg : Some students like music , others like painting .
一些学生喜欢音乐 ，另一些学生喜欢画画 。
（5）the others 表示特指某范围内的 ‘’所有其余的人或物 ‘’。
eg : A few of those in white are doctors ,the others are nurses .
穿白衣服的人当中 ，一些人是医生，其余的是护士 。
