The countryside where great trees had covered for miles around has been on fire for
three weeks. When the forest fire had at last been put out by firemen, the countryside
was completely devastated. Winter was coming on and the desolate hills threated the
villages with destruction for heavy rain would not only wash away the soil but would
cause serious floods as well. The forest authorities therefore ordered several tons of a special type of grass-seed which would grow quickly. They had the seed planted by
aeroplanes. The planes had been planting the seed for nearly a month when it began
to rain. By then, however, in many places, the grass had already taken root and
patches of green had begun to appear in the blackened soil.
