Lesson 71 A famous clock
When you visit London, one of the first things you will see is Big Ben, the famous clock which can be heard all over the world on the B.B.C. If the Houses of Parliament had not been burned down in 1834, the great clock would never have been erected. Big Ben takes its name from Sir Benjamin Hall who was responsible for the making of the clock when the new Houses of Parliament were being built. It is not only of immense size, but is extremely accurate as well. Officials from Greenwich Observatory have the clock checked twice a day. On the B.B.C. you can hear the clock when it is actually striking because microphones are connected to the clock tower. Big Ben has rarely gone wrong. Once, however, it failed to give the correct time. A painter who had been working on the tower hung a pot of paint on one of the hands and slowed it down !

1. If the Houses of Parliament had not been burned down in 1834, the great clock would never have been erected.
erect
verb [VN] (formal)
1. to build sth
»The church was erected in 1582.
--› note at build
2. to put sth in position and make it stand vertical
【SYN】put sth up:
»Police had to erect barriers to keep crowds back.
»to erect a tent
--› note at build
3. to create or establish sth
»to erect trade barriers
2. It is not only of immense size, but is extremely accurate as well.
immense
adj.
• extremely large or great
【SYN】enormous:
»There is still an immense amount of work to be done.
»The benefits are immense.
»a project of immense importance
Immense means very large in size, amount, or degree. You might describe the ocean as immense, or your homework load, or the slice of cake your brother took, leaving you a tiny sliver.
This word has an immense number of near synonyms: huge, great, enormous, vast, gigantic, colossal, mammoth, copious, tremendous are a few of the more common ones. If you're having immense difficulty deciding which word to use, just plain "very big" might do.
也可以用sea of something: a large amount of sth that stretches over a wide area 大量;茫茫一片
He looked down at the sea of smiling faces before him.
造个句:sometimes I felt I got immense housework to do and there is still more coming which makes me frustrated.
3. On the B.B.C. you can hear the clock when it is actually striking because microphones are connected to the clock tower.
■When a clock strikes, its bells ring to show what the time is(时钟)敲,鸣,报时
•The clock was striking ten as we went into the church.
intransitive(struck,struck)
■When a particular time strikes, a clock's bells ring to tell people what time it is(时间)鸣报
•Midnight had just struck when I went upstairs to bed.
At its most basic, strike means to hit. If you strike someone, you hit them with your hand or a weapon. If lightning strikes, it makes contact. If you strike out on a trip, you're "hitting" the road. If you strike gold, you've "struck it rich"!
Strike can also mean not to hit, as in miss –– as in "three strikes and you're out." That meaning might have evolved from strike meaning to cross off, as in "If you don't come to practice, coach will strike your name from the starting lineup." It might also have led to the idea of a labor strike. If employees want to protest their work conditions, they go on strike, or refuse to work until conditions improve.
造个句:i'm hoping one day the luck would strike me.
(NAmE) ~ (against sb / sth) a bad thing or action that damages sb / sth's reputation• (有损声誉的)不利因素,打击:
»The amount of fuel that this car uses is a big strike against it.
4. Big Ben has rarely gone wrong.
If you almost never do something, you can say you do it rarely. If you walk or bike to work most days, you could say that you rarely take the bus.
Something that happens rarely happens only once in a while, or seldom. You might sigh that your town's baseball team rarely wins a game, or boast that you rarely forget a person's name once you've been introduced. The word comes from the adjective rare, "not occurring often," or "unusual," from the Old French rere, "sparse," and its root, the Latin word rarus, "thinly sown, with intervals between, or full of empty spaces."
5. A painter who had been working on the tower hung a pot of paint on one of the hands and slowed it down !
hang:
When you hang something, you dangle or suspend it. You can hang a piñata from a tree, hang a picture on the wall, or hang a wind chime on your porch.
People hang all kinds of things: washing on a clothesline, a rope swing over a lake, or a shower curtain in the bathroom. An artist also hangs an art show — meaning she installs it in a gallery or museum, and maybe literally hangs paintings on the wall. If your mouth hangs open, it gapes, and when fog hangs in the air, it rests there, suspended. Informally, you can "get the hang" of something, or figure it out through practice.
hand:
Your hand is the appendage with fingers at the end of your arm. When you clap your hands, you loudly smack their palms together to express your appreciation and enthusiasm.
Human hands have 27 bones, as well as extremely dextrous thumbs that make it possible for us to do things that very few animals can do. Your hands enable you to pick up small things, hold a baby, pet a cat, speak in American Sign Language, chop vegetables for a salad, and many other things. When you clap, you give someone a hand, or applaud them — and another way to lend a hand is to help someone out.
»She was on (her) hands and knees (= crawling on the floor) looking for an earring.
to be dealt a good / bad hand
[sing.] ~ in sth the part or role that sb / sth plays in a particular situation; sb's influence in a situation
»Early reports suggest the hand of rebel forces in the bombings.
»Several of his colleagueshad a hand in his downfall.
»This appointment was an attempt tostrengthen her hand in policy discussions.
想了想,除了minute hand, hour hand,还有green hand, give me a hand,还有什么呢? 比如leg, break a leg, 眼睛呢?the apple of the eye, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, 跟眼睛相关的词还有呢?eyelash, eyebrow, eyeball,在查词过程中想了想,observe也是跟“眼睛”“看”相关的词语吧。还有“鼻子”的相关词语,nostril, don't pick up your nose。还有耳朵,be all ears, play it by ear等等。 今天听广播,关于snow的相关词汇跟用法,有flurry, blizzard, sleet, snowflake, be snowed under, as pure as the driven snow.
