Good evening ladies and gentlemen,
I’m Jin Jing from social work, and I’m glad to stand here to share my views on individual value and social responsibility. Cause this topic is so big, so I just choose a specific aspect to illuminate. Thus, my topic today is: When we talk about scandal, we talk about what?
Firstly, I want to make a confirmation: Everybody here knows Chen Guanxi right? In 2008, he was drawn into post-scandal and he soon got punished, from being highly praised to being spurned like a drowning dog. Shortly after that he announced to quit the entertainment industry forever. The reason why I mention him at the moment is not for your shrugging off, giving a white eye, complaining “platitude again”, but raise a question: How are these heroes and heroines’ getting along with their lives?
Recently, Xinshixiang published an interview about Chen Guanxi which attracted me very much. It did satisfy my curiosity about how are public figures getting on after getting involved in a scandal? Because the attention of the public is hard to sustain and the reporters seem to be always busy seeking something shocking to catch people’s eyes. As a result, I seldom get chances to know the follow-ups.
While I was reading the article, the most frequently appearing sentence I saw was: This world still hasn’t let me off. It has been nearly ten years since the case was exposed, and Chen Guanxi still got negative influence from it, he was often rejected by the director because of his past, although he made formal and sincere public apology and started with a clean slate. “People seem to have forgiven me but they actually still think of me as the one I was ten years ago. They labeled me bad and consider me to act worse. I am totally different now and I want to be an actor and do what I really want, but does this world give me a chance?” his words showed a sense of unwillingness which remind me of a western saying: The one trying to wear the crown must withstand the weight. Each person should take responsibility for his actions, especially those who are influential to the public. When they make a mistake, millions of people blame them for it, honestly speaking, it’s a must because our society needs correct mainstream values to guide human’s development. However, life sometimes is too strict and too cruel, we usually don’t give them a forgiveness from the bottom of our hearts after they reformed themselves. Sometimes, it may lead to the killing of a genius. Some critics like to stand on the high ground of morality, taking social responsibility as a weapon to attack others, from my perspective, Internet and public figures are just their angry outlets, perhaps the envy of people better than them motivates them. However, we common people, because of lack of information, don’t know idols’ change and only keep their bad behavior in mind for a long time, judge them as bad guys, and even deny their work. It’s unreasonable.
Back to the theme, what I really want to advocate is that nobody is perfect. Public figures should correct their values and take social responsibility but not too much. They needn’t pay ten years even all their lives for their mistake. A more harmonious society is a more tolerant society.
That’s all, thank you.
