His father, who was an affluent local farmer, died three months before he was born.
His mother remarried a wealthy minister and left him with his grandmother when he was only three years old.
He was admitted to the King’s School in Grantham where he boarded with a pharmacist and was exposed to the knowledge of chemistry.
His mother failed to make him a good farmer and later allowed him to continue his basic education in the school.
His uncle considered him a smart and intellectual youngster and convinced his mother to have him enter the university. After that, he enrolled in college through a work-study program.
He was very industrious and elected as a minor fellow at Trinity College (三一学院).
He received his Master of Arts degree in 1669 when he was at age 27.
He made many discoveries in different fields of science, such as optics, physics and mathematics. For instance, he found that white light was composed of all colors of the spectrum (光谱).
He said: “if I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.”
He dedicated himself to his historic book, Principia (《自然哲学的数学原理》), which played a significant role in helping him to explain bodies of motion with three basic laws of motion.
He designed and invented a reflecting telescope in 1668.
People believe that an apple falling from the tree inspired him to come up with the theory of gravity.
