Guiding Questions

1.why does Baby Suggs insisted on calling herself Baby Suggs instead of Jenny Whitlow?

She was called Jenny for the name on her sales ticket was Jenny Whitlow. When Mr. Garner said if he were a free man he'd stick to the name Jenny Whitlow. Because "Baby Suggs ain't no name for a freed negro." However, if she changed her name to anything other than Baby Suggs, her husband would never get the chance to meet her again.

Maybe not, she thought, but Baby Suggs was all she had left of the “husband” she claimed. A serious, melancholy man who taught her how to make shoes. The two of them made a pact: whichever one got a chance to run would take it; together if possible, alone if not, and no looking back. He got his chance, and since she never heard otherwise she believed he made it. Now how could he find or hear tell of her if she was calling herself some bill-of-sale name?

2.In the flash back, we can see the white girl-Amy’s various deeds toward Sethe. What do you think are reasons that Sethe  named the new-born baby after Amy Denver? (except for the reason of helping Sethe with her  baby delivering)

It was with Amy's help that ultimately Sethe didn't give up on herself and made through all of it. Before they went apart, Amy said there won't be any chances this baby could knew her unless her mother tell her there once existed a Miss Amy Denver, from Boston. And when Sethe looked at the baby in sleep, she thought it was really beautiful to think of Denver when she saw the pretty girl.  I guess this is why Sethe named the baby after Amy Denver.

3.In the carnival, when Denver was surrounded by a crowed of people who pleased her enough to consider the possibility that Paul.D wasn't all that bad,why did Denver change her attitude towards Paul.D?

I think not only because Paul D kept company with her and Sethe all those days, also he kept being nice to her. And when Paul D brought them to the carnival, Denver felt the happiness and gentleness of other people. It's the pleasure everybody has influenced her attitude toward Paul D.

Soothed by sugar, surrounded by a crowd of people who did not find her the main attraction, who, in fact, said, “Hey, Denver,” every now and then, pleased her enough to consider the possibility that Paul D wasn’t all that bad. In fact there was something about him-when the three of them stood together watching Midget dance—that made the stares of other Negroes kind, gentle, something Denver did not remember seeing in their faces. Several even nodded and smiled at her mother, no one, apparently, able to withstand sharing the pleasure Paul D .was having.

4.How did Denver change her attitude towards Paul D?

Like June wrote it's complicated, changed from threatened to grateful and then changed again. I believe with the story goes, it may change again.

My Ideas

I like the way the author writes, like a tree grows, every branch and leaf leads to a piece of story will ultimately make its sense. You can also tell though the author is a black person, she had been well educated and cultivated. I learned a lot useful expressions from her. Searching on the internet, I learned a lot about that time. Doing this also raised my interests of learning more about history of that time.

Expressions

1. man v.

If you man something such as a place or machine, you operate it or are in charge of it.

原文:Denver bought horehound, licorice, peppermint and lemonade at a table manned by a little whitegirl in ladies’ high-topped shoes.

Mr. Smith manned the reception desk in the morning"

Three of them dismounted, one stayed in the saddle, his rifle ready, his eyes trained away from the house to the left and to the right, because likely as not the fugitive would make a dash for it.

2. dismount

If you dismount from a horse or a bicycle, you get down from it.

可以理解为get off

3. train

aim or direct at; as of blows, weapons, or objects such as photographic equipment

例句:

"He trained his gun on the burglar"

" Don't train your camera on the women"

4. likely as not

(as) likely as not = most likely 或者 very likely 表示很可能,多半、或许

例句:

"It's perfectly normal and likely as not to be correct in the longer term, if this is still a secular bear market."

"Mr. Norman will help you, as likely as not"

5. make a dash

make a dash 表示猛冲、撞击,类似的表达还有make a final dash 最后冲刺

原文:

Three of them dismounted, one stayed in the saddle, his rifle ready, his eyes trained away from the house to the left and to the right, because likely as not the fugitive would make a dash for it.

6. draw a breath

...Halle, who had never drawn one free breath, knew that there was nothing like it in this world.

draw a deep/cold/long breath

7. milk

If someone milks a cow or goat, they get milk from it, using either their hands or a machine. 给…

例句:Farm workers milked cows by hand.

milk a person for information

pull it out

8. chore

Do errands or chores for them.

9. skip a meal

Death is a skipped meal compared to this.

Tim说他的理解是:this “thing” is so horrible that made death feels trivial in comparison.

Death is like skipping a meal compared to this.

10. crack

If something hard cracks, or if you crack it, it becomes slightly damaged, with lines appearing on its surface.

If something cracks, or if you crack it, it makes a sharp sound like the sound of a piece of wood breaking.

11. temple

Your temples are the flat parts on each side of the front part of your head, near your forehead.

She grabs the hair at her temples.

12. mud-caked

原文:...when she woke, mud-caked, on the banks of the Ohio.
