L4-U2-P4-1 Listening: Al Capone 1艾尔·卡彭

Al Capone was one of the most famous criminals in American history. 阿尔·卡彭是美国历史上最著名的罪犯之一。

He came from an immigrate family. 他来自一个移民家庭。

His parents came from Italy and his father was a barber. 他的父母来自意大利,父亲是理发师。

As a boy, he belonged to a street gang. 他小时候是街头帮派的一员。

He quit school after finishing the 6th grade. 他6年级毕业后就退学了。

He built his career as a crime boss in Chicago.他在芝加哥建立了自己的犯罪头目生涯。

He became boss at 26 when the previous leader was nearly killed. 他在26岁时成为了老板,当时前任领导人差点被杀。

His crime organization made a lot of money, more than 100 million dollars a year. 他的犯罪组织赚了很多钱,每年超过一亿美元。

Most the money came from illegal activities, especially the sale of illegal liquor. 大部分的钱来自非法活动,特别是非法酒的销售。

In 1930, Capone was Public Enemy NO.1 in Chicago. 1930年,卡彭是芝加哥的头号公敌。

A year later he was arrested for failure to pay taxes. 一年后,他因未交税而被捕。

(He was sent to prison for tax evasion. 他因逃税被送进监狱。)

The government had finally found a way to catch him. 政府终于找到了抓住他的办法。

After a trail, he was found guilty and sentenced to 11 years in prison. 经过审讯,他被判有罪,判处有期徒刑11年。

He spent the first 2 years of his sentence at a prison in Atlanta,Georgia. 他在乔治亚州亚特兰大的一所监狱度过了服刑的前两年。

Then he was sent to Alcatraz, the country’s most famous prison. 然后,他被送往该国最著名的恶魔岛监狱。

L4-U2-P4-3 Vocabulary: Economic Terms经济术语

Income is money received for work or from investments. 收入是从工作或投资中得到的钱。

For a company to survive, its income needs to be more than its expenses. 一家公司要想生存下去,其收入必须大于支出。

People who earned a good salary can buy what they need to survive. 收入不错的人可以买他们生存所需的东西。

A receipt is given to you after you have paid for something. 收据是在你付款后给你的。

A receipt is proof that you have paid for something. 收据是你已付款的证明。

A receipt shows that something has been paid for. 收据表明东西已经付了钱。

After paying for something, be sure to get a receipt. 付了钱之后,一定要有收据。

An invoice is a request for payment. 发票是要求付款的票据。

An invoice lists the prices and the products being bought. 发票列出了价格和购买的产品。

To invoice someone means to give them a bill for the products or services. 给某人开发票意味着给他们一张产品或服务的账单。

Once an invoice is paid, it can be used as a receipt. 发票一旦支付,就可以作为收据。

Taxes are what we pay to the government for the government services. 税是我们为政府服务而向政府支付的。

(People pay taxes to pay for government services.人们交税为政府服务买单。)

Taxes pay for many services, such as education, police and health care. 税收支付许多服务,如教育、警察和医疗保健。

An income tax is a tax on your income. 所得税是对你的收入征税。

In some countries, income taxes are very high. 在一些国家,所得税很高。

Interest is what we pay to lenders when we borrow money. 利息是我们借钱时付给借贷者的钱。

If someone lends you money, you pay interest for the use of that money. 如果有人借给你钱,你就要为这笔钱的使用支付利息。


L4-U2-P4-4 Personality Types人格类型

Emotional people often show their feelings and have a bad temper. 情绪化的人经常表现出自己的情绪,脾气也不好。

They make decisions based on their feelings more than facts. 他们根据自己的感觉而不是事实来做决定。

(Someone with a bad temper gets angry easily and shouts at others.脾气不好的人很容易生气并对别人大喊大叫。)

Sometimes these people make bad decisions because of their emotions. 有时这些人会因为他们的情绪而做出错误的决定。

Leaders are people who take responsibility and are trusted by others. 领导者是承担责任并得到他人信任的人。

Good leaders make good decisions and get things down. 好的领导会做出好的决定并把事情做好。

In many situations, others look to them for leadership. 在很多情况下,其他人都指望他们能发挥领导作用。

Loyal people can be depended on to follow their leader. 忠诚的人是可以信赖的,他们会听从领导的。

They will support and protect their leaders and friends. 他们将支持和保护他们的领导人和朋友。

(loyal people will act to support the decisions of the group.忠诚的人会采取行动支持团队的决定。)

A strong team needs a good leader and loyal followers. 一个强大的团队需要一个好的领导和忠诚的追随者。

Independent people can do things on their own. 独立的人可以自己做事。

They often prefer working by themselves. 他们常常喜欢自己工作。

Sometimes they have difficulty working in a group. 有时他们很难在团队工作。

Creative people come up with new ideas and ways of doing things. 有创造力的人会想出新的想法和做事的方法。

They often have a good imagination and can see things in different ways. 他们通常有很好的想象力,能以不同的方式看待事物。

Many artists and musicians are very creative. 许多艺术家和音乐家都很有创造力。


L4-U2-P4-5 Dialogue:A Video Project 1视频项目

W: Congratulations, Lisa. 恭喜你,丽莎。

Lisa: Congratulations for what? 恭喜什么?

W: We just heard the news. 我们刚听到这个消息。

Lisa: What news? Don’t keep me in suspense.什么消息?别和我卖关子。

W: QuickServe has accepted your video proposal. QuickServe已接受您的视频提案。

Lisa: Already? I just submitted it a week ago.已经接受了?我一周前才交的。

W: Maybe so, but they liked it so much that they made a quick decision. 也许吧,但他们太喜欢了,所以很快就做出了决定。
