09/01/2023 Willing hearts

A secular, non-affiliated charity, Willing Hearts is wholly run by volunteers, apart from a handful of staff. It operates a soup kitchen that prepares, cooks and distributes about 11,000 daily meals to over 70 locations island wide, 365 days a year…

5-9am,9am-1pm and 1pm-5pm if I have remembered correctly.

Stage 2: Find the place. Correct postal code : 425792 ( 1 Lor J Telok Kurao). The next day, me and my mom decided to visit willing hearts, without initial intention to do voluntary work. The website did not update the headquarter’s new location, so we were led to a wrong place. The uncle there told us that the willing hearts had shifted away 6 months ago.  I think the old headquarter has transformed into a plantation school for handicapped people. This is because when I reached there and asked workers questions, one woman seemed to be deaf and mute and another woman looked a bit different from normal people. However, after taking bus 13 and sat for three stations, we managed to find “ 愿之心“.  It is a giant building, colored white and the only mural on the building is its name and a pair of hands, holding a red heart.

We went inside the yard and started our work immediately after some simple consultations with volunteers there. If you want to collect VIA hours and obtain certificate, you have to scan the QR cord to check in and check out every time. Once you check in, time will be recorded, and it will stop record time when you leave and check out. By the way, to obtain the certificate, you have to at least complete 30 hours of work at willing hearts and send an email with evidence.

Stage 3 : Cutting vegetable. Next, we cut spring onion( 大葱), celery( 芹菜), scallion 等等。

I had encountered a quite awkward thing. When we were cutting green onion/ spring onion, one of the auntie said the sticky mucus on the interior leaf was very nutritious , she wanted to keep all the leaves. I should say nothing, yet, I said something really silly. I told the aunties that the mucus was called cellulose , which I spelled wrongly before too, I spelled it as cellose.  Another auntie used her phone to type down the word, which really made me feel regretful to tell her. It is not cellulose, its name should be cell sap.  Indeed, based on my poor biology, cell sap contains all the nutrients.
