英语常见习语 idioms | 第一轮

1. a blessing in disguise: a good thing that seemed bad at first 塞翁失马,焉知非福

2. a dime a dozen: something common 多得很,不稀罕,不值钱,容易得到的,比比皆是;These are a dime a dozen

3. beat around the bush: avoid saying what you mean, usually because it is uncomfortable 说话言辞闪烁,绕圈子,拐弯抹角;eg: Don’t beat around the bush. Give it to me straight.

4. better late than never: netter to arrive late than not to come at all 亡羊补牢,犹未晚矣

5. bite the bullet: to get something over with because it is inevitable 忍痛,咬紧牙关,忍受困难勉为其难做某事;eg: You have to bite the bullet! 你一定要坚持住!

6. Break a leg.: good luck 好运!祝别人好运

7. pull one’s leg 开某人玩笑

8. push one’s luck 贪心,得寸进尺,碰运气;Don’t push your luck with me.

9. Let’s call it a day. = Wrap it up! :stop working on something 今天就到这吧!结束了,歇工了!

10. cut somebody some slack: don't be so critical 放某人一马;eg: Cut me some slack. 给我一点特殊优待吧。别这么严格,放我一马吧。

11. cutting corners: doing something poorly in order to save time or money 抄近路,走捷径;偷工减料,以简便的方法做某事;eg: You cannot cut corners if you want to be a top student.

12. Easy does it: slow down. 不着急,小心谨慎;慢慢来,别生气了。

13. There there. :used to calm somebody or urge somebody to relax, especially when the person is crying.(用于安慰人的时候)好啦,乖,摸摸头。eg: There, there. Even though you broke up with her, you'll be fine.

14. Here here. :as in you agree with it so much that you want everybody else within earshot to hear it.(辩论时,下面的人同意上面的人说的话)附议!同意!

15. get out of hand: get out of control 失控

16. get something out of your system: do the thing you've been wanting to do so you can move on 一直做某事直到做到吐不想再做了;eg1: I got drinking and partying out of my system during college. I'm ready for a quieter life now. eg2: He's been talking about skydiving for so long, I'm just glad he's finally going to get it out of his system.

17. get socked with sth: to suddenly receive something that causes you problems: 突然受到某事一击,重击;eg: If you don't pay your credit card bill on time, you'll get socked with a huge late fee.

18. Get your act together.: 1. To take action to become well-organized, prepared, or in a better state of life.准备好,组织好;eg: You need to get your act together and finish packing so that we can leave for the airport on time tomorrow morning. 2.To organize one's thoughts, often with the aim of regaining one's calm 组织思想,使自己冷静下来;eg: I really need to get my act together before I go into the board meeting.

19. pull yourself together: calm down放松!振作起来!= let your hair down 不拘礼节,随意放松,放松点!

20. get sb’s goat: to annoy someone very much激怒某人,惹某人生气;That sort of attitude really gets my goat.

21. To get bent out of shape: to get upset 生气,eg: Don't get all bent out of shape—I'm sure she didn't mean to insult you.

22. get under one’s skin 打扰,激怒,使某人不爽

23. stick in one’s craw: to rankle or irritate one. 忍不了了,不能容忍;eg: It really sticks in my craw that he would lie and take all the credit for my idea!

24. That's the last straw. :My patience has run out 真是让人忍无可忍了。独自使用

25. the last straw, the final straw (压倒某人的)最后一根稻草;

26. a straw in the wind: a small sign of what might happen in the future (预示发生某事的)迹象,苗头,征兆;

27. give someone the benefit of the doubt: trust what someone says 姑且认为某人是对的,姑且相信某人(在信息不完整的情况下),假定某人是无辜的;eg1: You're my sister! Can't you give me the benefit of the doubt, instead of believing the worst about me right away? eg2: Let's give him the benefit of the doubt before we start accusing him. There may be a good explanation for the missing money.

28. go back to the drawing board: start over 从头开始,推到重来;= from scratch;eg: We need to go back to the drawing board on this project. I think it had some fundamental flaws from the start.

29. Hang in there: Don't give up. 坚持住!= bit the bullet.

30. hit the sack: go to sleep = hit the hay睡觉,就寝;

31. hit the spot:1. to satisfy something, such as hunger or a craving.使人满足,正好需要,;eg: That burger really hit the spot—I didn't realize how hungry I was. 2. o be correct or accurate 恰到好处;You really hit the spot with that answer—good job.

32. hit the jackpot 赢得大钱(lottery),中了头奖;取得成功;eg: Marcy hit the jackpot with her new job—it's basically her dream job, plus a huge salary.

35. hit the road 开始流浪,上路;hit the gym 去健身房 head to the gym

36. hit the ceiling 大发雷霆,暴跳如雷;eg: Mom will hit the ceiling when she finds out we broke the vase by playing ball in the house again.

37. hit the deck: 1. to drop to the ground, usually in an attempt to avoid danger. eg: All the soldiers hit the deck when the enemy plane flew overhead. 2. to get out of bed. 起床,准备行动,准备工作 eg: It's already one in the afternoon—hit the deck!

38. It's not rocket science.: It's not complicated. 这么简单的事情!eg: Sure, it took a little bit of time to figure out, but reinstalling the modem wasn't rocket science or anything.

39. Let someone off the hook: to not hold someone responsible for something; To pardon, release, or allow one to escape from blame, responsibility, obligation, or difficulty.让某人免于责难,摆脱麻烦,拜托困境;eg: At first, Sam was suspected of stealing money from the safe (n.保险箱), but he was let off the hook after security camera footage showed it was someone else.

41. miss the boat: It's too late错失良机;eg: If you don't call the recruiter back right away, you're going to miss the boat.

42. be in the same boat 处于同样的困境;eg: My sister failed her driver's test, and I'll be in the same boat if I don't practice parallel parking. (parallel parking 路边停车)

43. rock the boat: to do or say something that might endanger a stable situation or upset the status quo. 捣乱,破坏良好现状;

44. be on the ball: doing a good job, Attentive, knowledgeable, and quick to take action.;敏锐,机警,精明干练;The new publicity manager is really on the ball. 精明干练。I'm so glad that my assistant is always on the ball because I'm too scatterbrained(精力不集中的,丢三落四的,“brain都scatter散落到各处了”) to manage my schedule on my own.

45. speak of the devil. 说曹操,曹操就到!The person we were just talking about showed up!

46. the best of both worlds 两全其美 An ideal situation, The most ideal or desirable attributes of two different things, situations, or circumstances. eg: I believe that living at college gives you the best of both worlds: a place where both study and social life can thrive.

47. Time flies when you're having fun.快乐的时光总是短暂的。 eg: Wow, it's midnight already? I feel like we just got here. Time flies when you're having fun!

48. to make matters worse: make a problem worse; 使情况更糟糕,更糟的是;eg: I heard that Julie is being let go from her job, and to make matters worse, she hasn't been there long enough to qualify for severance pay(解雇金)!

49. under the weather 身体不大舒服 = sick

fit as a fiddle 身体非常健康

50. We'll cross that bridge when we come to it. 船到桥头自然直,总会有办法的、。Let's not talk about that problem right now.

51. wrap (one's) head around (something): To comprehend something that one considers challenging, confusing, or a foreign concept. 理解无法理解的事情,理解困难的事情;eg: Kate is willing to pay full price for an expensive handbag, but I just can't wrap my head around that.

52. You can say that again. 说得好!说的很对!That's true, I agree. 确实,我同意。

53. Your guess is as good as mine. 我跟你一样猜不透。I do not know either; I have no idea. Typically said in response to a question. eg: A: "Where's Hank?" B: "Your guess is as good as mine. He didn't say anything to me."
