A report from China Tourism Research Institute and Ctrip Tour Group shows that outbound travel for Chinese citizens exceeded 130 million and cost 115 billion 290 million dollars in 2017. China has become the largest source country for more and more countries. The data shows China has become the largest source of inbound tourism in 10 countries including Thailand, Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, Cambodia, Russia, Maldives, Indonesia, North Korea and South Africa. Chinese tourists account for up to 30% of international tourists in these countries. In 2017, China also became the second largest source country for tourists visiting Antarctica.
From the chart, 9.8 million Chinese traveled to Thailand and accounted for 28% of the total number of tourists from Thailand. In the same year, Chinese tourists to Japan reached 7.35 million, accounting for 25.6% of its international tourists. About 30% of international tourists from Vietnam come from China in 2017.
Who were these 130 million tourists?The data shows that women love to travel abroad more than men. According to Ctrip's statistics on outbound travel orders, 59% of outbound tourists in 2017 were women, 41% were men. And the proportion of women was 18 percentage points higher.
As young people who were born in 90s and after 2000 gradually become the main force of Tourism, more and more tourists decide to travel with shorter preparing time. From the chart, up to 29% young people make a decision to start a travel only with a week before travel.
The outbound tourism consumption of Chinese tourists continues to increase. According to the online booking data, the average outbound tourist expenditure in 2017 reached 5,800 yuan, up 7% over the same period last year. The top ten cities with the highest spending per capita in 2017 are: Beijing, Shanghai, Suzhou, Wenzhou, Shenyang, Changchun, Dalian, Qingdao, Guiyang and Jinan. Beijing ranked first with 6,817 yuan, followed by Shanghai, Suzhou and Wenzhou.
According to the data, the most popular 20 destination countries by Chinese tourists in 2017 are Thailand, Japan, Singapore, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, United States, South Korea, Maldives, Cambodia, Russia, UAE, Italy, France, Australia, Spain, Germany , England, Sri Lanka.
Thailand and Japan were the top two most popular destinations in 2017, with 9.8 million and 735 million mainland Chinese tourists visiting these two countries respectively. According to online travelers' search and booking data, 20% of outbound tourists choose Thailand and 14% choose Japan.
In 2017, Chinese tourists are more aware of the safety of outbound travel. Security issues are very important in traveling abroad. There are four major types of Chinese tourists seeking help overseas and the most common accidents: accidental injuries, loss of belongings, re-applying for documents, and language barriers. Of these four categories, accidental injuries accounted for the highest proportion of 35%, and the loss of goods accounted for 33%.
