Rike:
Hey, Uncle Bruce, it’s Rike.
Bruce:
Hey Rike, long time no see! To what do I owe this call?
Rike:
I’m calling because I want to ask you for some investment advice.
I’ve saved up some money over past two years, and now I’m looking to make it grow by investing it.
Since you work in banking, my daddy encouraged me to ask you for some advice.
Why did his father encourage him to call his uncle? -His uncle works in banking.
I’ve saved up some money over past two years, and now I’m looking to make it grow by investing it.
Bruce:
Sure, anything I can do to help out?
Rike:
One of my friends has suggested that I put into the stock market.
He recently invested 15 thousand dollars in a new company called Avex Technologies.
And he says they’re on fire.
So I want to ask if you knew they were a good company to invest in.
Where has his friend suggested that he invest his money? -in the stock market.
If a company is on fire,... it is doing extremely well.
He is calling him because he wants some investment advice.
He is suggested he put his money in the stock market.
He recently invested 15 thousand dollars in a new company called Avex Technologies and he said they're on fire.
Bruce:
Well I haven’t heard of Avex, so I would have to know more about it before I could answer that.
But the smartest advice I’ve ever been giving about investing is to diversify.
I don’t doubt your friend has made a lot of money with Avex, but make sure you don’t put all your eggs in one basket. 【填空】
What advice does he give hie nephew? -He should diversify his investments.
Rike:
Oh I totally understand. Actually I want to ask whether you knew about any other good companies I could invest in.
Bruce:
By diversify, I mean finding investments outside of individual shares of stocks.
Playing in the stock market can be exciting and yield big returns, but there’s also a lot of risk involved. 【
If you are not careful, you could lose quite a bit of money.
If your friend has 15 thousand dollars in Avex alone,I think he must either be very rich or very brave.
What did he mean by diversify? -He should put his money in many different investments.
What can the stock market yield? -Large returns.
He shouldn't put all his eggs in one basket.
Investing in the stock market can yield big returns, but it's also risky.
Rike:
Well, I’ve saved up around 10 thousand dollars.
How much of that do you think I should use for buying stocks?
Bruce:
Personally, I believe that when you invest in the market, you should never put in more money than you're comfortable with losing.
Ten thousand dollars is nice a lot of money to begin an investing with.
But if I were you, I would consider putting majority of it in more conservative investment.
If he were his nephew, ... he would make more conservative investments.
Rike:
My dad says that too. He keeps telling me that I should put at least half of my money into something called the index fund.
Bruce:
I agree with him. An index fund is a great idea for someone in your position.
Basically, it is like a basket of stock with inner certain index like the S&P (Standard & Poor) 500 and Dowjones.
Because you’re buying into all the stocks in a certain Index, no matter how individual stocks perform, the returns remain relatively stable.【
Dowjones
How much money does his dad think he should invest in the index fund? -at least half of it.
Why did returns remain stable in the index fund? -You own all the stocks in an Index.
No matter how its stocks perform, the returns remain stable.
Because you own all the stocks, the overall return is balanced.
Rike:
But doesn’t that mean that the overall returns will be lower?
Bruce:
Yes. The potential pay off may be less than investing in individual stocks, but over time the interest compounds so that gradually you can make a lot. 【
And ten years time, your initial investment could even triple.
【选择】-Why can he gradually make a lot by investing in an Index Fund? -the interest compounds over time.
If the overall returns from an Index Fund are stable, they may also be....
Rike:
That does sound like a smart investment. Although I wish I could find a way of investing that would make me money this year, not ten years down the road.
Bruce:
Well like I said, investing is all about diversification.
It’s a bull market after all, so it won’t hurt to put 2,000 dollars in some popular stocks.
With prices going up and people buying more, you should be able to see some immediate returns.
Why should he see an immediate turn if invests in popular stocks? -It's a bull market.
To compound means to build up over time.
In a bull market, stock prices go up and people buy more stocks.
Bruce:
Just remember that no market last forever.
And when the market sees a correction, you’ll be glad to put some of your money in the index fund.
Rike:
You know you really are our proud, Uncle Bruce.
You’ve given me so much great advice. Thank you very much!
Stock prices are going up, so he should see an immediate return.
I wish I could find a way of investing that would make me money this year, not ten years down the road.
