《老人与海》第二部分的残酷和绚丽，让我想起15年李安的电影《少年pi的奇幻漂流》

Ineffectually & there is no sense
“As he watched the bird dipped again slanting his wings for the dive and then swinging them wildly and ineffectually as he followed the flying fish.”
这两个表达方式都有无用，无效的意思。但是一个是副词，一个是名词短语的用法。而且前者似乎是用于说明我们干的活儿没有用。后者是做这件事本身没有意义的意思。
练习：I work ineffectually on the project.There is no sense to do it well.
Bait
“It had a wire leader and a medium-sized hook and he baited it with one of the sardines.”
这是设置陷阱的意思，当初啃生肉玩饥荒的时候，利用萝卜捉兔子就是用的Bait。
Whiplash
“But these poisonings from the agua mala came quickly and struck like a whiplash.”
鞭打，抽打
有趣的是我发现爆裂鼓手这个电影英文名就是这个单词。感觉比爆裂一词更符合剧情设定啊。
练习：Some people enjoy the pain from a whiplash.
“He lay in the stern in the sun, compact and bullet shaped, his big, unintelligent eyes staring as he thumped his life out against the planking of the boat”
在这句讲鱼在甲板上跳动求生的句子里，用了Thump这个词。这个词意为重击，仿佛让人感受到了鱼生命的节奏一下下打在心坎上。而且说明了它跳得特别大力。thump life out都有种鱼的灵魂快被甩出来了的感觉，把挣扎求生的感觉写出来了。特别妙。
trickle down
“The sun was hot now and the old man felt it on the back of his neck and felt the sweat trickle down his back as he rowed.”
缓慢滴落。 有一个经济学名词叫涓滴经济学用的就是这个词。

片段感悟
这部分的开头，有这样的一场“追逐戏”
“As he watched the bird dipped again slanting his wings for the dive and then swinging them wildly and ineffectually as he followed the flying fish. The old man could see the slight bulge in the water that the big dolphin raised as they followed the escaping fish. The dolphin were cutting through the water below the flight of the fish and would be in the water, driving at speed, when the fish dropped. It is a big school of dolphin, he thought. They are widespread and the flying fish have little chance. The bird has no chance. The flying fish are too big for him and they go too fast.”
飞鱼、海鸟、海豚的这场追逐，让这片广阔的海面成为了一个残酷的舞台。“物竞天择，适者生存”的战斗在这仿佛就变充满生命活力的舞蹈。这让我想起很多好莱坞动画开头人物登场的长镜头。这一段放置于老人和大鱼搏斗之前大概也有序幕和伏笔的作用吧。
The clouds over the land now rose like mountains and the coast was only a long green line with the gray blue hills behind it. The water was a dark blue now, so dark that it was almost purple.
这句话开始的一段是小说中的名段，整段充满了灰、蓝、黛绿、紫等等压抑却又奇幻色彩的颜色，拉远了读者与文字的距离，为老人海上的经历蒙上了一层有虚构美的面纱。但后面老人那每一次用力，那孤独绝望的感受，那实打实的残酷的伤口和溃烂又使事情显得那么真实。冲突中，距离恰恰好。
另外这段里关于鸟飞远了，水面剩下一些黄色的草和水母的描写，让我想到“众鸟高飞尽，孤云独去闲”这句诗。只是，这里的孤独是相同的孤独，在危机四伏的大海上倒是不可能闲了。
“Most fishermen hated the taste. But it was no worse than getting up at the hours that they rose and it was very good against all colds and grippes and it was good for the eyes.”
这一段有一个好有趣的对比，对鱼肝油的恶心味道没有早晨起来那么痛苦。果然起床是全世界人民
老大难问题。
“I wish I could see him only once to know what I have against me.”
没有比连自己对手是什么都不知道更可怕的了。可生活中哪有那么多可预知的对手呢？这句话里充满了绝望，但老人没有绝望。正是老人在绝望中拼命与绝望抗争的精神带使故事变的悲壮。
我还注意到，老人在和大鱼僵持不下的时候多次提到了男孩。
“Then he said aloud, “I wish I had the boy. To help me and to see this.”
“I wish the boy was here”
老人希望男孩来帮忙，因为他真的有点力不从心。他也希望他来看看，能够有他年青时没有的视野。老人对男孩的感情大概夹杂着年轻力量的羡慕，对自己暮年的悲苦，和对自己人生的反思，复杂而细腻。
