Lesson 1:

Ten positive emotions (frequency of people daily experience):

  1. Joy (playful)
  2. Gratitude (creative giving)
  3. Serenity (savor and integrate)
  4. Interest (explore)
  5. Hope (yearn for positive change)
  6. Pride (dream big)
  7. Amusement (non-serious social incongruity, shared laughter, insight)
  8. Inspiration (aspire to excellence)
  9. Awe (accommodate the new)
  10. Love (all of above)
  • For most people, positive emotions outnumber negative emotions in daily life.
  • Positive emotions have the momentary effect of broadening your awareness, which over time builds your resourcefulness
  • Negative bias: The tendency to attach more weight to negative events than to positive events
  • Negative emotions motivate us to have one or two specific action urges, while positive emotions motivate us to be more open and have multiple action urges.

Lesson 2:

  • Broadened Awareness
  • Increases in positive emotions -> build resources -> increase life satisfaction
  • Resilience (positive emotion builds resilience. There is definitely upward spiral dynamic between positive emotions and resilience)

Lesson 3:

  • Positivity ratios
  • Prioritizing positivity
  • Positivity and policy
    Stress can lead to excessive narrow-mindedness
    Experiencing frequent negativity can become a habit in the same way that positive emotions can become a habit

Lesson 4:

  • What is love?
  • Positivity resonance
    For positive resonance to emerge, people must both feel safe and experience real-time sensory connection
  • Loving-Kindness introduced
  • Love-Kindness practiced
  • Positive connection with people
  • Love-Kindness meditation
    Love is a momentary feeling that is dynamic and changing
    Having a lack of positive social connections can be just as damaging to your health as smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, or being obese
    The purpose of smiles:
  1. To express positivity to others and evoke positivity from others
  2. To collectively broaden mindsets and build resources among groups of people
  3. To create moments of positivity resonance which ultimately serve as a nutrient to out health and wellbeing

Lesson 5:

  • Cardiovascular Benefits (vagus nerve)
  • Nudging the upward spiral between positive emotion and cardiac vagal tone
  • Immune Benefits
  • Savoring connections (Positive social connection forecasts health and longevity.)
    Friends don't let friends lose their capacity for humanity
  • Daily social interaction habits strengthen our "social connection muscle", which improves our biological capacity to socially connect as long as we continue to exercise this "muscle"
    Face-to-face interactions enable greater synchrony and shared positivity between two people, which can ultimately improve our health and our capability to empathize

Lesson 6:

  • Gratitude
  • A new emotion born
    Relationship satisfaction receives the greatest boost when expressions of gratitude are mostly focused on the person who did something kind for you
