When you visit London, one of the first things you will see is Big Ben, the famous clock which can be heard all over the world on the B.B.C. While the new House of Parliament was built, the great clock tower was also erected. It was then named Big Ben by Sir
Benjamin Hall. It is extremely accurate for officials from the Greenwich Observatory
have the clock checked twice a day. Because of the microphones connected to the
clock Tower, you can hear the clock on the B.B.C if it is actually striking. Only on one
occasion did Big Ben fail to give the correct time because a painter who had been
working on the tower hung a pot of paint on one of the hands and slowed it down.
