LONDON – Who better to pair up for a collaboration than French designer Camille Walala and toy brand Lego? Both known for exploding spaces with colour, geometry and fun in design and in play, Walala and Lego partnered to create House of Dots, a five-room interactive house. Built with the help of 180 children and a group of adult fans of the iconic Danish blocks, the temporary London installation teases Lego Dots, a new arts-and-crafts, 2D-tile play-building concept.

Open at Coal Drops Yard in Kings Cross, House of Dots is the result of internal research completed by Lego – through a quantitative study conducted with 10,800 parents and 7,200 children across the US, China and Germany, the company’s designers found that ‘children are increasingly looking to shape their creative confidence through more personalized forms of play,’ according to a spokesperson. The end-product, informed through a total of 21,000 play observations, seeks to give kids the option to explore freely and express themselves through their own designs.

The reality-suspending environment has a living room, kitchen, bedroom, bathroom and two unconventional residential additions – a disco and nearly 2.5-m slide from which to exit the experience from. Spread over eight shipping containers, every interior element is a customized hybrid of Walala’s distinctive style and the visual language of Lego Dots. Two million Lego tiles dot the installation, amounting to 150 sq-m of structure built with the product.

Producing the installation was no small feat, taking 800 man-hours to fully ‘dot’. ‘It was a huge and ambitious project to deliver in a very tight time frame – and unlike anything we’ve done before,’ says Walala. ‘Something like House of Dots would normally take us a year; in this case, we had about three months. I loved having the freedom to play, to let my imagination run free and create a house of fantasies.’ Surely young tykes that experience the space will feel inspired to do the same.
