This is a story about a family of witches. The Device are born to be witches. Whenever they curse someone, he or she will die later. The devil is with them. Jennet, the second daughter of Elizabeth, is different because she is not a witch. The Device are very poor and live by begging. When Jennet was nine years old, her elder sister went out to look for some food because of the very hunger. Alizon met a pedlar and asked for money. The pedlar, John Law, refused her and left coldly. Alizon was too angry to cursing John dead. John was then badly ill so that the villagers were requesting the trial of the witches’ family. James had once killed a child, Elizabeth had killed a man by clays of pictures and Alizon killed someone with the help of her dog. Jennet told the truths in front of the judge and the villagers. She lost her family after telling the truths. Roger Nowell was kind and accepted Jennet to be a cook, working at his house for 21 years. After Mr Nowell died, a boy, innocent, lied that Jennet had done something bad. Jennet died because of the lies.
