Due to the comprehensive development of the tourism industry, as well as the drive of the positive factors such as visa facilitation, international airline encryption, tax free business landing and seriesof tourism activities, the scale and consumption of China’s inbound tourism market have continued to grow, particularly in the increasing of foreign passenger markets.
In 2016, China has received 138.44 million overseas tourists, rising by 3.5% year-on-year, which led to a record high of totalscale. Among them, 28.15 million are foreign tourists, setting a new recordsince the financial crisis with an increase of 8.3% over the same period. Thetop10 tourist source countries are as follows: South Korea, Vietnam, Japan,Burma, the United States, Russia, Mongolia, Malaysia, Philippines and Singapore.
As the data shows, foreign exchange revenue fromChina's inbound tourism reached 120 billion dollars in 2016, increasing by nearly 5.6% compared with last year, which maintained a good momentum of steady recovery and achieved a trade surplus of 10.2 billion dollars in tourism services. The consumption of foreign tourists has reached 66.8 billion dollars,contributing a remarkable growth rate of 10.3%. In the following, I will choose ten provinces in China which got the highest international tourism foreignexchange earnings in 2016 and analyses the development of inbound tourism inChina, such as Guangdong, Fujian, Shanghai, Beijing, Jiangsu, Tianjin,Zhejiang, Yunnan, Shandong and Anhui Province.
In 2016, Guangdong province ranked first in the reception of overseas tourists with the number of 35.08 million. It was much more than other provinces. The next closest area was Shanghai, whose number of visitors is 6.9 million and Fujian was in the third place with the number of6.11 million.
Overseas tourists refer to foreigners, compatriots from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan who visit China (Mainland) for vacations,visiting relatives and friends, shopping or engaging in economic, cultural andso on, staying at least overnight in tourist accommodation facilities in China(Mainland). And the top3 provinces that receive the foreign tourists were Guangdong, Shanghai and Zhejiang Province.
In Beijing, 3548 thousand visitors were from abroad while618 thousand were from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan in 2016. The population offoreign visitors was much larger than visitors from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan.Besides, the foreign exchange income of tourism was 5.07 billion dollars, up by10.1%.
From 2007 to 2016, China’s inbound travel market hasbeen continuously to expand and rapidly to develop. The number of overseastourists was increased in most of the provinces. What’s more, Guangdong has heldthe largest number that received overseas tourist in the past decade.
According to the data graph, with the growing population of the inbound tourists,China’s international tourism foreign exchange earnings are in sustained and steady growth. The promotion of tourism consumption has been further enhanced. In the past decade, the growth rate of Guangdong Province is the most apparent and evident and it has an increase of nearly 10 billion dollars over ten years ago.However, the foreign exchange income of Jiangsu Province has been reduced in 2012 and Zhejiang Province has been reduced in 2016.
Since the reform and opening up, the Chinese government has promulgated a series of policies aimed at promoting the development of the tourism industry. Tourism has become one of the industries with the fastest development speed and obvious international competitive advantages in China's national economy. It is expected that in the next 10years, China's inbound tourism will continue to maintain rapid growth and become more and more attractive to the tourists from all over the world.
