Electric Cooperatives and NRECA

I was told by Jay earlier that the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA) wanted us to come up with a guide for its members on how to choose a cyber-insurance policy. So I did some research about this organization.

Cooperative is a form of entity that its consumers are at the same time its owners. People with the same needs of things like utility plants get together and invest in the required infrastructures by paying utility bills. In this way, they are consumers as they pay to get the services and products, and meanwhile they own the infrastructures. Many electric cooperatives were formed in the 1930s in rural areas as investors were typically not interested in building power plants outside the cities, so people living in the rural areas did not have electricity for a long period until the New Deal signed by President Roosevelt allowed them to form cooperatives and build their own power facilities with federal loans.

The NRECA, founded in 1942, represents around 900 of these rural electric cooperatives. It functions as a lobbyist and speaks for its member cooperatives to legislatures. Through the association, its members can have a united voice and make it heard by the federal government.
