Actor hit by accusations of academic plagiarism

A Chinese TV actor, who also has a PhD from Beijing Film Academy and is a postdoctoral candidate at Peking University, found himself in hot water recently after allegations of plagiarism, which kicked off a new wave of discussions over academic misconduct in China.

in hot water

表示“陷入困境;惹上麻烦”,英文解释为“to be in or get into a difficult situation in which you are in danger of being criticized or punished举个🌰:

He found himself in hot water over his comments about immigration.

plagiarism

plagiarism /ˈpleɪdʒəˌrɪzəm/ 表示“剽窃”,英文解释为“Plagiarism is the practice of using or copying someone else's idea or work and pretending that you thought of it or created it.”

The journal accused the professor of plagiarism.

academic misconduct表示“学术不端”,其中misconduct有“不端行为;不诚实行为;胡作非为”的意思,英文解释为“bad or dishonest behaviour by someone in a position of authority or trust”,如professional misconduct 可表示失职,玩忽职守,举个🌰:

He was fired for serious misconduct.

conduct作名词表示“行为,举止”,英文解释为“the way someone behaves, especially in public, in their job etc”,例如:

2017年新年贺词中,有这么一句:

党风、政风、社会风气继续好转。continue to improve our Party and our government's working style, as well as our social conduct,其中的社会风气就用的social conduct.

1)「Part 7」2018政府工作报告中加强党风廉政建设 do more to improve Party conduct, build a clean government.

With firm resolve, we have tightened discipline and improved Party conduct, fought corruption and punished wrongdoing,

Sina Weibo user "PITD亚洲虐待博士组织" on Saturday accused Zhai Tianlin, 32, who most recently appeared in China's 2019 Spring Festival Gala on China Central Television, of plagiarism. The user uploaded a paper by Zhai, which was published in an academic journal in August 2018, to a plagiarism software platform. The similarity score for the 2,783-word article was 40.4 percent after it was put through the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), a similar platform to Google Scholar, according to the Weibo post.

Zhai has been mired in controversy since he asked in a live video in August 2018 what the CNKI was.

be mired in controversy

be/become mired (down) in sth 中”,英文解释为“to be involved in a difficult situation, especially for a long period of time”,如be mired in controversy 陷入争议,举个🌰:

The peace talks are mired in bureaucracy.

"As someone with a PhD, how could he not know what the CNKI is? And how could he have never used it for referencing academic works?" wrote a shocked netizen. The video  sparked questions over the originality of Zhai's academic works. Some netizens claimed Zhai had sought out essay-writing services, a practice regarded as academic misconduct.

The posts stirred heated debate in Chinese cyberspace, with many netizens saying that it is unfair to industrious students who work hard to obtain a degree. They called for strict rules on academic misconduct.

“激发/引起(争议/讨论/质疑)”

这篇文章中出现的类似表达有:

kick off a new wave of discussions

spark questions

stir heated debate

◉ kick off通常用来表示“开始(事件或比赛)”,If an event, game, series, or discussion kicks off, or is kicked off, it begins.

The shows kick off on February 12th.

He kicked off the party.

◉ stir表示“激发,激起(强烈的感情);引起(强烈的反应)”,英文解释为“to make someone have a strong feeling or reaction”,举个🌰:

The poem succeeds in stirring the imagination.

◉ spark也可以指“引发,导致”,英文解释为“to be the cause of something, especially trouble or violence举个🌰:

The police response sparked outrage in the community.

还可以spark sb’s interest/hope/curiosity 激起某人的兴趣/希望/好奇心等(to make someone feel interested, hopeful)

◉ provoke也表示“激起,引起”,英文解释为“to cause a reaction or feeling, especially a sudden one”,如:provoke debate/discussion 激起辩论/讨论。

industrious

If you describe someone as industrious, you mean they work very hard.”

(If you describe someone as hardworking, you mean that they work very hard.)

Another netizen commented that anyone with the title of scholar should devote themselves to research, but those who wear the veneer of a scholar are just "hateful."

veneer

veneer /vɪˈnɪə/ 表示“掩饰物;虚饰”,英文解释为“something that hides something unpleasant or unwanted”,举个🌰:

She managed to hide her corrupt dealings under a veneer of respectability.

a veneer of politeness/sophistication etc (掩饰真实性格或感情的)彬彬有礼/世故等的伪装(behaviour that hides someone’s real character or feelings formal)

"According to the laws on higher education, there are principles about academic performance but no specific punishment for offenders. Students suspected of plagiarism are always punished according to the regulations of their own academic institution," said Zhi Zhenfeng, a legal expert at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences in Beijing.

“高等教育的相关法律对学术行为有所规范,但是对于违反规定的人,没有具体的惩罚方法。涉嫌剽窃的学生所受到的惩罚通常是由其所在的学术机构规定的。”

Zhi noted that the Beijing Film Academy holds responsibility for investigating the allegation and should release its findings as soon as possible. Zhai's supervisor is also responsible for the failure in supervision and instruction if Zhai is confirmed to have violated academic integrity, he said.

“学术诚信”怎么说?

academic integrity表示“学术诚信”,其中integrity表示“耿直,正直诚实”,英文解释为“the quality of being honest and strong about what you believe to be right”,如a man of great moral integrity 道德高尚、正直诚实的人。

"The key to stamp out academic misconduct is to investigate and deal with cases immediately," Zhi said.

stamp out

表示“杜绝,消除,消灭”,英文解释为“If you stamp something out, you put an end to it.举个🌰:

The new legislation is intended to stamp out child labor.
