墨西哥裔小女孩Esperanza在12岁左右的时候全家搬到芒果街上的小屋，这里是墨西哥裔聚居的嘈杂社区。小女孩在这一年慢慢成长，种族、性别、个体意识都慢慢觉醒。
家人、朋友、杂货店的老板、邻居家卖雅芳化妆品的姐姐、想要通过自己努力离开社区的小女孩、想要通过嫁人逃离满口粗话的父亲。一个个的小故事让我们走进Esperanza的世界，也帮助许多人打开尘封的记忆……

还记得《老友记》中Ross搬到新公寓后，不肯chip in 给杂工handy man 办派对吗？Ross认为自己刚刚搬进公寓，根本不认识handy man，所以不应该被要求凑份子，Ross 说自己是一个有原则的人 a man of principle！但是Ross的好友Phoebe却十分大方的chip in，这让Ross十分没有面子！
社区里窗边的女人
书中提到了许多坐在窗边的女人，他们也构成了这个社区的面貌。他们悲伤的望着窗外，彼此无法交流，有的人甚至没有多少抱怨。他们需要有人帮助，即便有的人自己还没有意识到。

And the story goes she never forgave him. She looked out the window her whole life, the way so many women sit their sadness on an elbow. I wonder if she made the best with what she got or was she sorry because she couldn't be all the things she wanted to be.Esperanza. I have inherited her name, but I don't want to inherit her place by the window.
