“thing”这个词可以用来代替所有具体名词的类别。无论你说一样什么东西，只要以这个为中心词，加一些辅助性的词、词组或从句进行解释就可以了。如“雨伞”你可以说“the thing used when it is raining”。“thing”的作用还不仅仅是用来解释你不会的名词，有时是因为没必要一定要具体说明是个什么东西，食物啊，衣服啊都可以用这个词来代替。
