1. 很，非常，表示程度。与形容词副词连用
eg. This is a rather large cake.
rather基本上可以用来替换very，特别是英式英语。very good, rather good，等等，在表达上没有太大区别。你可以多用rather，少用very来体现自己的英语水平。当然如果你想告诉别人你的英语是好莱坞和美剧教的，你也可以用pretty来替换所有的very。相似的词还有quite, fairly, 等等。
2. 可真，相当。用名词连用。
eg. That's rather an inconvenience to me
注意在与名词连用时，往往跟有负面含义的名词。如果是正面含义的名词，请用quite。he is quite a man。他是个真男人。如果说，he is rather a man。你的意思很模糊，倾向于你性别歧视男人。
3. 相当。到是，相反。与动词连用。
