Marko: Hello, English learners. Welcome to EnglishPod! My name is Marko.

Amira: I'm Amira.

M: And today we are gonna bring you a very useful lesson about being sick.

A: Yeah, we are going to learn how to tell your boss that you can’t go to work because you are sick.

M: Exactly, this is really important, because we all get sick. And sometimes you can’t go to work.

A: And maybe sometimes, you don’t want to go to work.

M: It’s likely. Maybe we are lying. But we are gonna teaching you how to do it anyway.

A: Before we start out dialogue, let’s take a look at Vocabulary Preview.

Calling in Sick

请病假

Vocabulary Preview

-In this Vocabulary Preview, we have 2 words for you. The first one is “quiteill”.

-quite ill. [3 times]

-so “quite ill”——

-“very sick”.

-So “quite” is similarly “very”?

-Exactly.

-“ill”——

-“sick”.

-So they both mean the same thing, no difference?

-No difference at all. I just think “ill” is more common in British English.

-Exactly, alright. Let’s look at our secondary word.

-“flu”.

-“the flu”.

-So the flu is a virus.

-Yeah, it’s a sickness.

-And it’s very similar to a cold.

-Yeah, but just a lot worse.

-It’s stronger.

-Yeah. It’s also calledinfluenza.

-Influenza. Exactly.

-So the flu. Ok, so let’s listen to the dialogue and hear what’s gonna happening next.

-We’ll going to listen Julia calls her boss to tell him she is sick.

-Alright, but is she really sick? I don’t know. Let’s find out.

Dialogue 对话

-Hello, Daniel’s speaking. May I help you?

-Hi, Daniel. Julia here.

-Hi, Julia. How are you?

-Actually, I’m feeling quite ill today.

-Oh, I’m sorry to hear that. What’s wrong?

-I think I’m coming down with the flu. I have a headache. I have a sore throat. I’m running nose. I’m feeling slightly feverish.

-So you arecalling in sick.

-Yes, I was hoping totake the day off to recover.

-OK. Trying get some rests.

-Alright, so Julia didn’t really seem to be sick. Hum?

-Yeah, I don’t know. That cough is a little too much.

-It seems that she was acting. Yeah.

Alright, so let’s look at some Vocabulary and Language take away

Language take away

-We have 5 words for you here. And these are all great words to describe the sickness, right?

-Alright, the first one—headache.

-headache.

-So when you have a headache, you have A sore head.

-Your head hurts.

-So it’s pretty simple.

-You have a headache.

-It’s the way you feel after being a bar too late.

-Yeah, when you drink too much, you get a headache.

-Alright, let’s look at the next word:sore throat.

-So basically we have two words here. Let’s look at the first word” sore”.

-Hurting

-It hurts.

-And “throat” is——

-It is the part right here. Right the back …You can see. It’s the part at the back of your mouth -that goes down to your stomach.

-Alright. That’s your throat. So you use your throat to swallow.

-We can use the word “sore” with different body parts.

-Like a sore back. Or maybe you are playing tennis once a week, and you have a sore arm.

-Or even sore leg.

-Ur-hum.

-So the word ”sore”. Let’s look at the third word "running nose”.

-running nose

-this is a very strange words, but it doesn’t mean your nose is running, right?

-No, but ok, when you have a running nose, there’s lots of water coming out of your nose, right?

-So It’s interesting. Because when you run, you go fast, right?

-So lots of water is coming fast out of your nose.

-running nose

-OK, our fourth word is “slightly feverish”.

-slightly feverish

-So,slightlyis——

-a little bit

-feverish——

-well, let’s break this word down. We know “fever”, right? So when you have a fever, your body is very very hot, because you are sick. So feverish is the feeling of your body——being very very hot.

-So you have a high temperature.

-It’s not you have a high temperature, butyou feel like you have a high temperature.

-Ok, so slightly feverish.

-And our last word” torecover”.

-Recover

-So this means toget betterright?

-Exactly. Can you only use when you’re sick?

-So when you recover, you get better and you rest. So maybe you can say ”I was so busy this week. I need to recover this weekends.”

-So if you feel tired, if you feel sick, you can recover.

-Ok, let’s listen to the dialogue again. And we can listen to these words that we’ve just talked about.

-Hello, Daniel’s speaking. May I help you?

-Hi, Daniel. Julia here.

-hi, Julia. How are you?

-Actually, I’m feeling quite ill today.

-oh, I’m sorry to hear that. What’s wrong?

- I think I’m coming down with the flu. I have a headache. I have a sore throat. I’m running nose. I’m feeling slightly feverish.

-So you are calling in sick.

-Yes, I was hoping to take the day off to recover.

-Ok. Trying get some rests.

-In this dialogue, we listened to some really interesting phrases of how you can tell your boss you are feeling sick.

-Yeah, some great phrases. So let’s look at these and fluency builder?

Fluency builder

-Ok, let’s look at our first phrase and fluency billada.

-I’m coming down with.

-Alright, so let’s listen some examples and then we’ll come back and explain the phrases.

Example 1

“My throat really hurts. I think it’s coming down with the cold.”

Example 2

“You have a running nose. Are you coming down with the flu?”

Example 3

“I am Feale. I think I am coming down with something. ”

-OK, so basically,“coming down with "means "starting to get sick”.

-I’m beginning to feel sick. So you can use a way I’m coming down with the flu.”

-I’m coming down with the cough.

-I’m coming down with the cold.

-Or I’m coming down with sth. Yeah, something, you don’t what it is.

-Exactly.

-The secondary phrase “calling in sick”!

-So this phrase is great!

-You know, when you say “calling in sick”, you say ”Hey, I’m not going to come to work today because I’m sick. ”

-So, literally, it means you call your office, you say you are not going to work.

-Yes, but it’s great because it’s 3 words that show such a long idea.

-Right. Otherwise, you would have to say” I’m calling because I don’t feel well. So I am not gonna work.”

-But if you say I’m calling in sick, everyone knows, everyone understands

-That you are not gonna work.

-Yes.

-Ok, now let’s look at the last phrase “take the day off”.

-This’s a great phrase. “To take the day off” is to

-Not go to work

-On that day

-Yes. You can saytake the week off, take the month off.

-Take the month off or take the year off.

-If you are so lucky!

-Alright, so take the day off means not to work on that day.

-Alright, let’s listen to the dialogue again now and then we’ll come back and talk a little bit more.

-Hello, Daniel’s speaking. May I help you?

-Hi, Daniel. Julia here.

-hi, Julia. How are you?

-Actually, I’m feeling quite ill today.

-oh, I’m sorry to hear that. What’s wrong?

- I think I’m coming down with flu. I have a headache. I have a sore throat. I’m running nose. I’m feeling slightly feverish.

-So you are calling in sick.

-Yes, I was hoping to take the day off to recover.

-ok. Trying get some rests.

-Oh, Marko, have you ever done what Jolia did? Did you call your boss to say you’re sick when you are not really?

-Yeah, of course. I mean, sometimes, you don’t feel very well. You are not sick. You are just not very well. You just don’t feel like going to work, or sometimes, you have something to do, right?

-We call those in Canada; we call them “personal day”.

-So you say “Oh, I’m take a personal day”. I’m in sick and go shopping.

-We used to do that a lot, because for example, soccer games are such a big deal.

-Oh, yeah.

-You know sometimes, you would have a soccer match between our notion and Brazil . And it would be maybe 10 a.m. or 11 a.m. So everyone would call in sick on that day.

-So the boss at least could plan that he would have an empty office.

-Yeah.

-Or sometimes you would take the half day off.

-So you’ll just go, say “I’m not going in the morning but coming in the afternoon”.

-So you would recover very quickly.

-Yeah.

-I’m feeling a little bit sick, but I’m going to be better in the afternoon.

-Alright, so, well, if you have any questions or comments, please come to our website. And if you have any calling in sick stories, please let us know.

-Yes, you can visit us at Englishpod.com. and, Marko and I are always there to answer your questions.

-So see you next time! Thanks for your listening!
