田黄产于福建福州市北郊寿山村的田坑，是寿山石中的珍品。由于它有“福”(福建)、“寿”(寿山)、“田”(财富)、“黄”(皇帝专用色)之寓意，具备细、洁、润、腻、温、凝印石之六德，故称之为“帝石”，并成为清朝祭天专用的国石。

Tianhuang, a rare stone in Shoushan, is produced in Tiankeng, Shoushan village, northern suburb of Fuzhou City, Fujian Province. Because of its implication of "Fu" (Fujian), "Shou" (Shoushan), "Tian" (wealth), "Huang" (emperor's special color), it has six virtues of fine, clean, moist, greasy, warm and condensed stone, so it is called "emperor's stone", and it became a national stone dedicated to heaven worship in the Qing Dynasty.

田黄石质地宝洁、透明、通灵，肌里纹路隐约如丝，明显细致，宛如萝线纹。田黄石大多为卵状，故用手抚摸时会有圆顺温润之感，一块好的田黄石若得巧匠雕琢则身价倍增，田黄雕琢手法有薄意、浮雕、圆雕和制成方章。将田黄石锯成方章，前人谓之“解石”，古人有“解石之难难于上青天”之说。这是因为田黄石很难从外表看出其色调是否表里一致，锯开来也许数倍增值，也许价落万丈。

The texture of tianhuangshi is clean, transparent and lucid. The lines in the muscle are faint as silk, obviously delicate, like threads of a rose. Tianhuang stone is mostly egg shaped, so it will feel smooth and gentle when touching with hands. If a good Tianhuang stone is carved by a craftsman, its value will be doubled. Tianhuang's carving techniques include thinness, relief, round carving and making square seals. When Tian Huangshi was sawed into a square chapter, the predecessors called it "Jieshi". The ancients said that "it's hard to understand the stone, but it's hard to go up to the blue sky". This is because it's hard to see whether the color of Tian Huangshi is consistent from the outside. Maybe it's worth several times as much as it's worth, maybe it's worth a lot of money.

薄意，即极浅陋的浮雕，因镌刻层薄而富有画意。薄意是寿山石雕的专用名词，也是寿山石一种奇异的体现技法。薄意艺术在明末清初石章的博古纹饰和锦边浮雕的基础上生长而成。康熙时已起源成形，雍正时臻于完善。
