I felt several of motions, feelings, values and experience after watching the movie and novel. Wilde's novel is often used sarcastically to satirize the values and lifestyle of the upper class. He expresses his feelings for each character through their tone and description of his clothes. I learn and realize many of his strengths and weaknesses from Sir. Robert. No one is perfect, I think he is perfect except when he was a secretary is to do something wrong. He loves his own wife, takes care of his young sister and the precious friendship with Lord Goring which were very valuable qualities at that era.
The story said in London there is a celebrity couple in the high society. Sir Robert Chiltern is a wise man who has an integrity career, and his wife is also a smart and preeminent women. More importantly, they love each other very much and respect each other. Everything is so perfect with the emergence of a "evil" woman who is called Mrs. Cheveley and burst, because she threatened the husband go to parliament and supported the proposal before to her plan. Otherwise Mrs. Cheveley will reveal Sir Robert’s misdeeds as a young man that his career started in the sell congress's important secrets. Then the cracks appeared between the couple, because his wife couldn't accept moral defective husband. Lady Chiltern always thinks her husband has always been the perfect and she was expecting an ideal husband. Thus, a discussion about justice, morality, politics, philosophy of life, relationships between men and women began. Each character is challenging the existing ideas, questioning and changing, because only which can they return to the undesired reality and move on.
As far as I am concerned, Sir Robert Chiltern is a wise, brave and considerate person, so I choose him as the analytical object.
At the beginning of the film, Sir Robert and his wife were introduced by the brief introduction of their status, work and social status gave us a general idea of the main characters. Through the description of Sir Edward in Sir Robert’s party, Sir Robert has a good reputation in the upper society. Not only was his ability and knowledge outstanding, but he was also very decent. Though he had done wrong in his youth, Sir Robert Chiltern was not very happy because he was rich. Instead, he lived in regrets and guilt because everything with his own has been paid for by fraud (P78). When his own reputation threatened by Mrs. Cheveley several times, he still made the right choice to say this scheme was more thoroughly and it grasp fully the ramifications of our lending it support. Indeed he was afraid of his reputation would lose, but he was more concerned with the interests of the country and live up to trust to his wife and friends. Sir Robert Chiltern was a man who really loved the country and cared about the interests of the country.
Sir Robert liked his wife very much and respected his wife. He was very respectful and considerate of his wife at the party and home. Besides, he is very grateful and cherishes the reputation and interests which are from his wife. When his wife knew the wrong thing about Sir Robert Chiltern, he was so worried and sad, but he did not give up endeavoring the forgiveness from his wife. Sir Robert found the Lord Goring and tried his best to find the effective way to solve the break between he and his wife, which can indicate his character. When Robert was threatened by Mrs. Cheveley, the first thing he did was consider his wife, and he asked his best friend to gently tell his wife and protect his wife.
What struck me most was the friendship between Sir Robert Chiltern and Lord Goring. Despite they had some differences; they were not influenced by the outside world as good friends. In my opinion, the simple friendship is very valuable. They admire and help each other. Lord Goring did his best to help his friend through those difficult times. Even if they had some minor frictions and misunderstandings, they eventually chose to forgive each other because of their mutual understanding and consideration for each other. The most important thing was that when the two of them had quarreled, Lord Goring still didn't give up their friendship to help Sir Robert Chiltern and went to the least interested parliament meeting. At the same time, Sir Robert Chiltern had not let Lord Goring despair and did support his original thought.
When Sir Robert Chiltern heard that his sister was going to marry Lord Goring, he still told them the note of Mrs. Chiltern although it was just a misunderstanding. Thus he was still very rational and fond of his sister.
Though the book, Lord Goring said to love oneself is the beginning of al lifeling romance. Sir Robert Chiltern said a political life is a noble career! (P16) What’s more, he also said that I demand that you make it now immediately without her, it’s true, I’m entirely unexceptional. Without her loving, I am nothing.
