A Beauty of Light and Small
How lovely things that are light and small can be —
a small joy, a small sorrow, that don't show on the face.
I can carry them with me,
think of them lightly, pray quietly.
I carry a tiny suitcase —
sometimes it's a drop of dew,
a wildflower, a blade of grass growing;
sometimes a bird before the window, a butterfly that strayed in,
or simply snow falling on a winter night.
I too can be light and small,
flying past the helpless suffering and disasters of this world,
living light and small in this mortal life.
