The man must not live in our age - his toilette and lighting candles in the background give him away. His decent social status, or great wealth, can be inferred from smart appearance, tidy and well-dressed. Temple hair has been carefully cut and shaped, and beard shaved too.
But his vibe would attract much more attention than his appearance. The expression he shows is indicative of a nice personality, or at least, he should be easy to talk to. But he may go further - possibly a dandy - his raising eyebrows and watery eyes drop armorous hints. Not sure if then he was casting amorous glances to the lady sitting beside him.
And do not cheat by the wrinkle on his forehead, mistaking him for middle-aged man. I guess that is a result of raising too much eyebrows, rather than the passage of time.
