WILLAIM SHASKESPEARE SONGS FROM THE PLAYS:Love’s Labour’s Lost《

(1) When Daisies Pied

SPRING

When daisies pied and violets blue

And ladysmocks all silver-white

And cuckoobuds of yellow hue

Do paint the meadow with delight

The cuckoo then, on every tree

Mocks married man: for thus sings he,

‘Cuckoo, cuckoo, cuckoo.’

Oh word of fear,

Unpleasing to a married ear!

When shepherds pipe on oaten straws,

And merry larks are ploughman’s clock;

云雀惊醒犁人;

When turtles tread, and rooks, and daws,

And maiden bleach their summer smocks,

The cuckoo then, on every tree,

Mocks married men; for thus sings he,

‘Cuckoo, cuckoo, cuckoo.’

Oh word of fear,

Unpleasing to a married ear!

Don’t you feel a little bit wired? me too! This poem actually has a satirical tone, ‘cuckoo’ sounds like ‘cuckold ’, which means a married man who has a unfaithful wife. That is to say,his wife has a second spring!
