看到词源在线网上的一篇文章，有感而发。先转（edege之）译如下 ——

Etymology's joke on us is that our very words that mean "grasp an idea of, mentally fit together parts of reality" — are themselves obscure or incomprehensible to us.
词源是为了更好地理解，然而词源学对我们开的玩笑是，理解本词——Understand——的词源，对我们来说本身就很模糊或难以理解。

比较法语中类似的平行词，entreprendre “承担，拿在手”（我们 enterprise一词的来源），其第一个元素是 entre “之间， 在之间”。同样， intelligence“理解，理解能力”是带有inter“介于”（和 “选择，挑选，阅读”）的拉丁语复合体。
Likewise intelligence "faculty of understanding, comprehension" is a Latin compound with inter "between" (and legere "choose, pick out, read").
但其他资料表明，古英语UNDER也有“在其中、在之间、在之前、在场”的延伸意义。“在其中”似乎是许多古英语复合词中的意思，例如“接收”，“检查，调查，审查”（“underseek”），“考虑，改变主意”（“underthink”）， “开始”。

也许“understand”的终极含义是“靠近”;比较希腊语 epistamai “我知道怎么做，我知道”，字面意思就是“我站起来”。
UNDERSTAND偶尔在中古英语中被记录在字面意义上：“在较低层次上占据空间”（14c后期），形象地说，“提交”。对于物理意义上的“站在下面”，古英语有 undergestandan .
古英语也有 oferstandan （中古英语），字面意思是“过度站立”，但它似乎只在字面意义上使用。

然而，拉丁语over-standing的复合体给了我们理解的敌对词： superstition迷信。拉丁语 superstitio “害怕基于恐惧或无知的超自然宗教信仰，被认为与真理或理性不相容。它的字面意思是“站立在…之上”，来自superstare “站立或站立”。有许多理论可以解释拉丁语含义的发展，但没有一种被普遍接受; de Vaan所作[“拉丁语和其他斜体语言词源词典”]认为这是“存续的原因”。

B站上有人转载过一个视频，在视频里，一个男子试着用古英语与现代弗里斯兰人对话：
西欧各国，语言渊源颇深，和华夏相比，也就是在历史上少了一个千古一帝。
在我看来，understand 的原义应该是：undertake and stand with，即接受、认为有道理。
就像学生理解老师教授的内容，是一种知识的接受和传承。
据说大多数印欧语系语言都使用复合物的比喻扩展，字面意思是“放在一起”或“分离”
这不就和我们的“理解”一词一样了？！
