今天,口译老师让就“病毒与偏见”为主题发表一篇演讲。拿来与大家分享。
Welcome to "Prejudice is more dangerous than virus".
Research shows that threats like the spread of disease tend to increase prejudice. Take AIDS for example. Because that virus initially spread among gay men, it fueled the discrimination to them. There is a parallel here in the wake of the 2014 Ebola epidemic. People held prejudice on African immigrants in West Africa.
When it comes to today’s coronavirus, prejudice and discrimination against Asians continue to spread. In some western countries, people now loudly invoking the virus assaulted Asians, likely because the virus was first contracted in the city of Wuhan, China.
In my opinion, there are three main reasons for the more serious racial discrimination in the epidemic:
The first reason is the cultural differences among nationalities. Due to the differences in political systems, ethnic beliefs, living habits and cultural backgrounds of different countries, it is inevitable that some cultural misunderstandings will occur. For example, during the prevention and control of novel coronavirus pneumonia, our people insisted on self-isolation and wear masks when going out. However, in the eyes of Western countries, wearing masks is a selfish act. Only those who are very ill wear masks. In their eyes, China's epidemic prevention measures have greatly restricted people's freedom and even are called "autocratic".
The second one is the limitation of the spread of information. Due to various reasons, including politics, the real situation in the countries hit hard by the epidemic often has to undergo many reforms before it can spread to the people of other countries, which results the ignorance of virus as well as the discrimination.
Thirdly, people's fear of the virus. As the researchers found, a definite association between the assessment of personal risk and fear of the disease, as well as the level of prejudice they held. In other words, the greater their fear of catching virus, the more prejudiced they were.
We can see that every time the epidemic breaks out, it is people's discrimination and prejudice that spread faster than the virus. The world is a village. Every one of us should always remember that our greatest enemy is the virus, not our human selves.
