The long walk goes on: Mandela at[1] 100
① Barack Obama will today deliver the annual Nelson Mandela lecture at a Johannesburg stadium, a day ahead of the 100th anniversary of the anti-apartheid leader's birth[2].
② Mr Obama's speech, billed as his most important since leaving the White House, will address themes of tolerance and democracy, in implicit contrast to the words and actions of Donald Trump.
③ He will also talk about challenges to Mr Mandela's legacy around the world.
④ In South Africa this legacy is being questioned amid frustrations over the lack of significant economic improvements in the lives of the black majority.
⑤ Inequality has increased since the end of apartheid.
⑥ Corruption metastasized and the economy stuttered under the miserable leadership of Jacob Zuma.
⑦ Unemployment and violent crime remain sky-high.
⑧ Mandela, sometimes criticised as having been too conciliatory, is a scapegoat for the failures of his party in governing and the deep scars of a country once divided by hatred and intolerance.
