Writing Task-One Introduction How-To

Writing task-one takes 20% of the Writing task band score, how to write the opening part, the introduction, becomes as vital as how you finish the rest of the paragraphs thereby the examiner will judge the quality of the entire essay due to its starting point.

Candidates should start the work by giving a concise description depends on the graph and question with 1-2 sentences, chiefly to include what does the graph show and for what period of time(if there is one).

  • explains why(only if the graph provides an explanation for something)

2. Paraphrasing

Rewrite the descriptive part which has given by the question

Example

  • shows the number of people = shows how many people...
  • depicts changes in spending on = depicts how much changed spending on...

Frequently used synonyms

  • number of = quantity of
  • spending = expenditure
  • rate = percentage
  • ratio = proportion
  • information = data
  • change = increase, decrease, or variation
  • share = portion (股份)
  • place = site

Time periods

  • from 1900 to 1901 = between 1900 and 1901
  • in 1983 = in the year 1983
  • in 1983 and 1985 = in 1983 and 1985 respectively = in the years 1983 and 1985

In summary,

Candidates do not have to make up everything new completely, rather take the given topic as a base, and change/add some details, i.e. paraphrasing.
