Dr. Stellacci found that some nanoparticles appeared similar to a protein that sticks to viruses, which inspires him to create particles that are just five nanometers wide. These nanoparticles are very successful in destroying commons germs, which triggers many different symptoms. Today’s antiviral drugs can stop a virus from multiplying only temporarily and may have negative side effects, but Stellacci’s hairy nanoparticles physically attack the virus before it can enter a healthy cell. The hairs on the particles, or receptors, can create pressure the virus, which “pops” and disappears. Recently, scientists had begun learning how to use nanoparticles in medicine in an innovative way for fighting infection.
