- Today the e-commerce giant’s minimum-wage rise goes into effect for 250,000 current workers and 100,000 seasonal ones.
- Amazon’s hourly workers in America will now be paid at least $15, a raise of 36%. One reason for the change is the competitive hiring market, as the national jobless rate hovers at a 49-year low of 3.7%.
- Other retailers such as Target had planned wage increases, so Amazon’s decision is aimed at ensuring it has enough employees heading into the holiday season.
- Second, the pay rise indicates that Amazon hears its critics: journalists and politicians have berated grueling conditions and bad pay.
- Bernie Sanders, a Democratic senator, had introduced a bill called the “BEZOS Act”, named after Amazon’s boss, which would require big companies with lousy wages to reimburse the federal government for social services.
