The Birthmark

“The Birthmark” is a tale about a scientist, Aylmer, and his beautiful wife, Georgiana. Aylmer wanted to remove the birthmark from Georgiana’s cheek, but he lost his wife’s life by doing so. The text has lots of long sentences. The tale wanted to deliver the idea that perfectionism may hurt people badly. I think this point is valid. Just like Aylmer, people believe there is always room to improve and achieve perfection. They would risk everything for that. On the one hand, it is making the world a better place; on the other hand, people may be sacrificing essential components for minor ones. Aylmer lost his wife just because he wanted to remove the small birthmark from his wife’s cheek. Does that really worth it? Why would he risk his wife’s life to do so? However, we may be just like Aylmer. We want to be better, but we don’t evaluate what the risk is.
