There 4 professions share some aspects butthere are completely different things. How we can differentiate between them? The plot below (taken from internet) gives a graphical representation of thedifferences:
An example of mentoring if parent to childor teacher to student relationship in which the learner is supposed to adsorbthe teacher experience and knowledge.
A consultant is usually hired by a firm forhis knowledge and know-how in a specific field and the consultant wouldtypically deliver a report with a set of recommendations to follow in order toachieve some goals that the firm set at the beginning.
Counselling is typically done by aprofessional and trained medical staff. The counselor typically looks at peopleas they have got problems rooted in their past. The consultant is typicallydriving the “show” and the client “needs” to follow the consultant suggestionsand interpretation of the past.
COACHING is a completely different ballgame. A coach puts the client in the driving seat of the car and let the clientdrive the car in any sound direction. The coach does not look at the past of aclient. The coach is only concerned about the future of the client. A coachaskes powerful questions and is oriented towards solutions.
In the plot below (taken from internet) youcan see the considerable differences between the 4 professions of Mentor,Consultant, Counselor, and Coach:
Who is coachable?
Everyone is coachable. The coachee sets thegoals and the coach allows the coachee to discover the inner power needed toreach the goals in a pre-agreed timeframe.
The ONLY people who are NOT coachable arethose stuck in the past. Those people who carry wounds from past experiencesand procrastinate in talking about past experiences and do not want to move on.Clearly, these people need more counselling than coaching and an attend coachwould not persevere in coaching this part of the general population stuck inthe past.
What a COACHEE is supposed to expect from dealing with a coach?
The following diagram shows at a glance thecoaching process. The ideal coaching process is rather agile and has specificsteps which the coach would take the coachee through in a timely manner, but atthe pace the coachee wants. The IDEAL coach is not interested in keeping the
coachee in sessions for years, as a typical counselor is. Coaching sessions aresold by small groups of 3 to 5 coaching sessions to achieve a specific goal.Usually no more than 2 coaching sessions per month are needed. For goodcoachee, the ideal is 1 coaching session per month. This time is needed becausethe coachee needs to implement the changes discussed and observe the benefitsthese changes bring.
