2020年11月15日CATTI三笔实务真题汉译英中有这样一句：
水稻是世界上最主要的粮食作物之一，目前，世界一半以上的人口、中国60%以上的人口以稻米为主食。
看到这个“人口”你会想到那个词？People？还是Population？
高斋翻译第8期（开课倒计时3天）会讲到19年6月CATTI二笔真题，其中也有这个知识点的翻译：
预计到2020年，全国60岁以上老年人口将增加到2.55亿人左右，占总人口比重提升到17.8%左右；
我看有一些同学会把这两个词用错了。今天“高斋CATTI”给大家分享如何使用People和Population。
这两个单词各自的用法很多，我这里就跟大家说一下常见用法，也就是CATTI和MTI考试中容易考的点。

1. population可以表示人数、人口，指某一国家或地区的全体人民，参考牛津词典解释，all the people who live in a particular area, city or country; the total number of people who live there.
比如：
农村贫困人口the rural poor population，城市人口the urban population.
中国总人口是the Chinese population，世界总人口是the world/world’s/global population.
如金融时报这句：
But they represent only about 12 per cent of the Chinese population.
但这个数字仅占中国总人口的约12%。

2. 提到具体多少人口的时候，如果使用people，可以数字+people，如果使用population，一般搭配是has a population of+数字，with a population of+数字。注意是a population of+数字，而不是数字+population，如词典中这句：
China is the world's most populous country with a population of 1.4 billion, which makes up approximately a quarter of the world population.
中国是世界人口最多的国家，有11亿，约占世界总人口的四分之一。
如果使用people，可以是数字+people，2020年政府报告中就有这样一句：
对我们这样一个拥有14亿人口的发展中国家来说，能在较短时间内有效控制疫情，保障了人民基本生活，十分不易、成之惟艰。
As a developing country with 1.4 billion people, it is only by overcoming enormous difficulties that China has been able to contain covid-19 in such a short time while also ensuring our people’s basic needs.
有学员之前问我：Joy老师，那可以说a population of 数字+people吗？
我们看看词典和金融时报上例句：
Ethiopia's large territorial area takes in a population of more than 40 million people.
埃塞俄比亚广袤的国土上生活着4,000多万人口。
In 1980 Shenzhen comprised two towns – the largest of which had a population of 20,000 people – and 15 former communes.
1980年，深圳有两个镇最大的一个有2万人口和15个公社。
大家看例句，有是吧！但是这种确实少见。所以建议大家还是按常见用法使用。

好，我们回归真题：
水稻是世界上最主要的粮食作物之一，目前，世界一半以上的人口、中国60%以上的人口以稻米为主食。
A. 世界一半以上的人口：可以翻译为over half of the global/world’s/world population.
B. 中国60%以上的人口：为了避免重复，不使用over 60% of the Chinese population，使用over 60% of Chinese people.
其他的地方这里就不细讲了。
最后，我们看看这句话的翻译：
Rice, one of the most important grain crops, is the staple food of over half of the global population, including over 60% of Chinese people.
当然，还有其他译法，比如：
Rice, one of the most important grain crops, feeds half of the global population including over 60% of Chinese people.
