  1. Previously on Desperate Housewives.
  • Previously on: 前情提要; 前情回顾。
    (看美剧的时候,基本上每一集刚开始都是previously on XXX (电影名). previously on xxx是一个副词修饰介词的例子,previously是副词,修饰介词on.其他的例子:well above average, well past midnight. )
  1. Our senses vanished. Taste, touch, smile, and sound, become a distant memory, but our sight, uh, our sight expands, and we can suddenly see the world we've left behind so clearly.
  • vanish:
    1.不翼而飞
    -He vanished without trace
    他消失得无影无踪。
    -disappear/vanish off the face of the earth
    完全消失;消逝得无影无踪
    2.消亡/灭绝
    -Thirty percent of all animal life vanished.
    3.消失
    Why does your sense of self vanish?
    为什么你的自我意识消失了?
  • a distant memory:遥远的回忆
    eg.
    -The life in the countryside has become a distant memory.
  1. Platinum jewelry and her brand-new diamond watch.
  • platinum /ˈplætɪnəm/ : 铂; 白金
    eg.
    -Platinum exceeds gold in value.
    -Metals commonly mixed with gold are nickel, platinum, and copper.
    通常与金混合的金属有镍、铂和铜。
  1. Gabrielle was a drowning woman, desperately in search of a life raft.
  • raft: 木排;筏;橡皮艇(觉得整个形容不错)
  1. She saw her young gardener as a way to infuse her life with a little excitement.
  • infuse/ɪnˈfjuːz/:to fill someone or something with an emotion or quality.
    ( in 进入 + fus 流,泻;融化 + e → 流进去 → 注入)
    eg.
    -His landscape paintings were infused with a warm, subtle light.
    -Many of the girls seemed to be infused with excitement on seeing the snow...
    -Herbalists infuse the flowers in oil
    补充:泡茶 - Allow the tea to infuse for five minutes.
  1. She knew if her husband discovered her secret, she would feel the full force of his wrath.
  • wrath /rɒθ/:extreme anger
    eg. The people feared the wrath of God.
  1. The peaceful facade of Wisteria Lane had recently been shattered.
  • facade /fəˈsɑːd/
    1.剧里的意思:虚伪的表面 (FALSE APPEARANCE)
    a false appearance that makes someone or something seem more pleasant or better than they really are.
    eg.
    -He kept his hostility(敌意) hidden behind a friendly facade.
    -We are fed up with(厌倦) this facade of democracy.
    2.建筑物的正面 (BUILDING)
    the front of a building, especially a large or attractive building.
    eg,
    -the gallery's elegant 18th-century facade.
  1. He's still mourning, he might freak out.
  • mourning /ˈmɔː.nɪŋ/ 读音和morning很像: great sadness felt because someone has died.
  • freak out : to become or cause someone to become extremely emotional.
    eg.
    -He freaked out when he heard he'd got the job.
    -This song just freaks me out whenever I hear it.
  1. Another bear claw?
  • bear claw: 熊爪, 剧里形容二次伤害。
  1. Do you remember when you proposed?
  • propose:to ask someone to marry you. 求婚
    eg.
    -I remember the night your father proposed to me.
  1. Susan awoke that night alone and parched, but as she gazed out her window, she saw the tall drink of water she needed to quench her thirst.
  • parch: /pɑːtʃ/ to dry something out because of too much heat and not enough rain. 剧里指:口干舌燥。
  • gaze out on (something):to look or peer out at something.遥望
    eg.
    -We stood on the balcony and gazed out on the New York City skyline in awe(感叹中).
  • quench:解(渴);止(渴);扑灭;熄灭
    eg.
    -Having a bottle of soft drink is not enough to quench my thirst.
    -Drink some sweet-sour plum juice (酸梅汁) to quench your thirst.
  1. Shouldn't you be making brownies for your nerdy friends?
  • nerdy/ˈnɜːdi/:傻瓜似的;呆傻的;蠢的
    eg.
    -I switched to contact lenses because I felt so nerdy wearing glasses.
    -You can even print out a certificate to show all your nerdy science friends.(这里指书呆子)
  1. I came this close to actually cleaning the house.
  • come this close:差一点点.(记得说这话时配上动作,哈哈)
    eg.
    -This afternoon I came this close to plowing into a huge truck(撞上大卡车).
  • I came this close to winning a pen. I only had one word wrong.
  1. Nope. You're not gong to buy your way out of this one.
  • buy your way out:To pay money to escape or avoid something unpleasant.
    eg.
    -With enough money, you can buy your way out of any problem.
    -You can't buy your way out of this mess, buster/jerk(混蛋)!
    -You made this mess and you can't buy your way out!
