Guiding Questions:️
Have you thought about death or dying? How did you feel when you were thinking about them?️
I didn't catch a glimpse of death. It seems that in our culture we tried to avoid talking about death even thinking about it. I feel strange and afraid when I was thinking of death. The author wrote 'Why do you care that I’m dead when you’re still so afraid to live?', I have the same feeling that death scares us. Yet, in a bizarre, backwards way, death is the light by which the shadow of all of life’s meaning is measured. Without death, everything would feel inconsequential, all experience arbitrary, all metrics and values suddenly zero.
How knowing “then you die” would affect the way we live? What is the sunny side of death?️
Knowing the fact that we all die makes us realizing what we really want to do and what kind of life we really want to live. The sunny side of death is knowing and understanding our fragility, which makes us accept the responsibilities we should take for our own.
Did you have a transformational moment growing up? Something you would consider a wake-up call?
I believe it's not strange for each one to have a few transformational moments in life. Once I was addicted to computer games a lot when I was in primary school. What I did everyday was playing or watching others play, because my parents were both busy with their work that time. It's interesting that I quit playing only because once one of my classmates played so terribly that finally made me never want to play with him or play the game anymore. Then I got separated from those kids and spent more time studying.
My Ideas
At one foot you feel like you’re floating. Anything but looking straight down feels as though you’re part of the sky itself. You actually kind of expect to fall at this point.
I like to hold my breath deep into water when I swim. I guess it is akin to stepping to the edge of a cliff like the author did. Knowing that you will die one day helps you cherish your time to live a better life. There are topics like death we avoid talking about, because we may fear to,be embarrassed to, or reluctant to realize the consequences are certain. But the acceptance of knowing something will happen makes a lot of things easier. You won't hesitate whether I should do it or not. You won't waste your time on things seem meaningless.
