The lack of number pad on laptop causes great inconvenience for number typing. Nums is an easy and unique solution to the problem.

Touchpad is a common hardware of laptops, which works as a mouse. Ideas are extremely fragile, so over the 6 years, we’ve really created a team to nurture them. We’ve worked very hard to ask an awful lot of questions. We have really made it a practice to just have our heads down and work. We ignore, in some senses, all the reasons why something shouldn’t be possible. Every single component, every process has been considered and measured to made it truly useful, and it actually enhances users’ experience. It is meticulously designed, engineered and crafted. Incredible transitions and quite shocking change is the behind the scene as boxes and boxes of the models and prototypes finally came to be a product that people love.

In these works, we keep thinking that how can we make high quality product without taking finite resources from the earth. On the very first prototypes the symbols were printed on the front side of a plastic and protected by matte textured coating. But the coating will wear out after a few months and the printing will gone later. Although the disappearance of the symbols means new purchases and profits, we do not allow this to be happened. As a touch interface and green solution, durable design is critical. Printing should not on the paste side is a principle as this produces bubbles when the sticker is attached. Fadeless quality and no bubbles seems hardly can be achieved at the same time. It takes us years of hard work through research, and finally we solve the bubble problem by preciously managing the manufacture process to control thickness of the printing less than one thousandth of a millimeter. Now, on every sheet of Nums, the symbol is carefully printed on the back side of the pristine glass to achieve a fadeless quality. The software technology means updates will bring new function without replacing the hardware. Our packaging, manufacture process, coating process is either recycled or responsibly sourced.

This product has made bulky number pad peripherals unnecessary. Although the change may seem insignificant, it’s a world-changing innovation in a sense that to think there are 230 million of laptops are sold at convenience store yearly and 930 million of laptops are being use for heavier jobs can not be done by phones. So that this product greatly helps reduce the amount of waste time in our work. This product shows the designer’s clear goal of solving a problem with simplicity, and it has achieved its goal through intensive trial and error. A way of creating design worth to be pursued.
